Mlfguns,
The ballistics report provided by AIUser is pretty basic stuff. The .375 can be loaded with 300 grain bullets at up to approximately 2700 fps with a 300 grain bullet and 300 yard trajectories closer to -10" low. I've proven this extensively. I've not experimented with the .416 Remington I used to own as extensively since recoil was too stiff for me and therefore, the rifle was sold. I would not ever plan to shoot something at extended range with a rifle that recoiled too heavily as it effects accuracy too drastically. I believe the .416 Remington magnum can be loaded up to approximately 2400 fps with the same pressure as the .375 H&H at approximately 2650 fps. This from an older Barnes reloading manual. Nothing I do, however, is scientific. It is through target practice, penetration testing and hunting experiences that I've gained my data. I believe the .416 caliber cartridges should be loaded at @ 2250 - 2300 fps for the best performance as they are a big bore and should be used as such. I know people want to believe their preferred caliber can do it all and I think I am one of them when I proclaim the virtues of the .375 H&H. I know it has its limitations as do all cartridges but I've experienced greater versatility in the .375 calibers than any other from deer up to huge Southeastern coastal Alaskan brown bear. Cape buffalo hunt to come shortly and I will be using the .375 H&H. As far as 350 grain bullets in the .375 H&H magnum, use the Woodleigh brand as they are not as lengthy and therefore, do not consume so much case capacity. I am not certain you can get the 350 grain TSX to attain 2411 fps velocity but take a look at the Double Tap ammunition with 350 grain Woodleigh projectiles at 2450 fps if you do not reload. They're pretty good and put a pretty good smack on most things. Anyway, from what I've experienced in owning and shooting both the .375 H&H magnum and the .416 Remington magnum is that they are very similar in performance. Go for the .458 calibers like the Lott if you want a real world step up in performance. Good luck on your quest. It will be a blast and the money spent will never be an afterthought. It wasn't after I got back from the Alaskan peninsula and that was over $13,000.00. Money well spent.

Thanks,

jfm

Thanks for the reply. I also share your faith in the old .375 H&H it simply works in the capable hands of any rifle man. With the quality of today's bullets it is that much more capable. I acquired the ballistics from the new Barnes reloading manuel. Professional hunter/author Kevin Robertson also recommends the 350 grain in the .375 H&H . I currently use the 300 grain TSX with full satisfaction in their performance. I have not hunted Africa yet but wish you a safe and adventurous cape buffalo hunt. I know some of the TSX bullets can be long I will look into the Woodleighs. There are so many capable calibers out there, it comes down to individual preferences and what they are willing to give and take. I'am very content with the .375 H&H and I have two. Best regards
Charles

I would base your choice on recoil tolerance. And be honest with yourself. Shot placement trumps.

Personally, I reached my tolerance level with a 416 Rigby. So down the road it went.

I was able to shoot a friends 404 Jeffery and am currently having one built. I could easily handle the 400gr bullets at 2300-2350fps in a 9.5 pound rifle.

I had a 375 and a 416. After a few years the 375 is down the road. For whatever reason, I could not get the 375 to shoot like the 416.

With regard to recoil. Get a correct weighted rifle and a correct LOP and perhaps some cast in the stock and that will do a lot to eliminate the felt recoil.
What works for me is a 14" LOP and 1/4 - 3/8 cast off. Everyone is different. I use a shorter LOP 13 3/4" if I am hunting in a cold climate where I have a coat that adds to the LOP.
I think when you get over a 338 they all smack you pretty good but if you practice you might just be able to master anything. If it requires more than a 458 Lott to dispatch, I am not sure I want to meet up with it.
I have fun shooting all of them and the big ones with open sights.
A well fitted 416 Remington is hard to beat.

I could get a lot of use from a 375H&H, and they are very versatile with bullet weights from 200 to 350 grains.

The 416 Rem is reviewed as much better on the heavy game, especially elephant.

Which should I go with and why?

Get all of them while there still $1200.00
