I am picking up my .375 tommorow and I was interested in knowing what a "good" scope to put on it is. I am looking for something in the 1-5 range for it. Whats your opinion on the best brand to get. Leupold, Burris, Zeiss or others.????

Thanks.

Just went through the same exercise... I chose the Leupold VXIII 1.75-6. Hard to beat.

I would go with the 1.5x5 or 1x4. Before I bought a 1.75 x 6 I would take one out of the box and hold it against your rifle with the bases attached to make sure it will fit easily. The 1.5x5 and the 1x4 (Leupolds) both have straight tubes and are easier to mount and position.

I have a Leupold 1.5x5 with the heavy duplex on one of my 375 bbls. My wife has a 1.75x6 with the heavy duplex on her 308. I have a 2.5x8 Leupold with the heavy duplex and a 1.5x6 Swarovski with the illuminated dot reticle both in QD rings on my 9,3x74R. All are great scopes.
I really like the Swarovski, but it is kind a pricey, but it is PERFECT for leopard, lion, black bear and wild pigs. All which may be shot in low light.
The Leupolds with the heavy duplex are a great choice as well. I REALLY like the heavy duplex on a big game hunting rifle. IT really shows up in low light/heavy brush situations.
I had no trouble hitting a coyote with the 9,3 double at 271 yards with the heavy duples in the 2.5x8, so do not worry about the reticle being to thick at long range. I have another 2.5x8 Leupold on my 223 with the regular duplex, which is fine for game shot with a 223, but for big game I much prefer the heavy duplex.
For an "African" 375 used mainly for DG I might like the 1.5x5. For a North American 375 I would go with the 2.5x8.
For an "all round" 375 the 1.75x6 would be hard to beat. All with the heavy duplex of course.

I have the Leopold 1.5x5x20mm VarixIII on my 375 and it is just about perfect for all round use imo. Its only shortcoming is very low light. If you are going to leopard hunt with it (and bear and...as NE 450 No2 recounted) then I would go with something better in low light and with an illuminated reticle.

In fact I'm looking at the high end Euro scopes now for just that purpoes.

Here is another vote for the Leupold 2.5-8. As flat as the 375 H&H shoots, this scope is a great choice for both here and Africa.

I am going with the Swarovski 1.5-6x42 4A1K 30mm on my .375 (currently being built), which is the same as I have on my .300WM - I really like it and want the rifles to be as similar as possible for ease of switching guns. Good Luck!

SB45,
I had a 1.5x5 Vari-X III, and have gone to a 2.5x8 Vari-x III and am much happier. I found that the heavy duplex on the 1.5x5 blocked the view too much, and I want to take full advantage of the range capabillity of the 375 H&H.

I just last week put a new Leupole scope on my 375 H&H. I had a 6x leupole and felt that was too much for anything up close. So I put a 2x7 leupole on. That scope does what I want.I plan
on Africa next year 2007.

On the big rifles, I like a 1.75-6x Leupold preferably with the No. 4 three post reticle. A good second choice is a 1.5-6x Nikon Monarch Gold, this scope has great glass, I just haven't tested it out as much on a heavy recoiling rifle, although mine has been on a 9.3x62 for a couple of years, to BC and back. It is way better optically than the Leupold, but is larger, heavier and not as proven.

Just to mention something that is not a Leupold - I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 in 1.5-4.5x32 with a Firefly reticle on my .375 H&H. It has 300 rounds through it and is still going strong.

I think that the first question you should ask yourself is for what purpose are you going to use this scope on this rifle? North American or European large and or dangerous game? African plains game? DG in Africa? For each of these, in my opinion, there is a different answer to the question of "what scope to use".

+1. My Nikon 1.5x6 Gold/.375 H&H combo has held up well so far with about ~~350 rounds through it and some rough handling over the past 2.5 yrs. Super glass quality but they are on the heavy side as are most 30mm tubed scopes. I'd buy another.

I put a 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest on my .375. My little 9,3x74R Chapuis came with an S&B 1.5-6x42 rail scope. Used a Leupold VXII 1.5-5 IR on my .416 Rigby. Am very happy with scopes on their respective rifles.

Not surprizingly the S&B scope passes the most light. I think it and the Leupold illuminated reticle scopes would be best for dusk and maybe leopard. They're all dandy in the daylight.

Have a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8 on a 9,3x62 CZ American. It is not the scope than any of the other three are. Works but not great at dusk.

I would say it all depends on what you'll do with it.

My benchmark for bigbore scoping is a LEU 2.5X w/ HD. I've yet to try this scope w/ the new WD but the published substentions appear suitable.

If I need more magnification I'll go LEU 1-4X w/ HD next, followed by LEU 1.5-5X w/ #4. I've shot medium sized game out to near 300 yards with the 1.5-5x #4 and did not feel the need for more magnification, but I see no problem with using anything up to the LEU 2.5-8X depending on your task and/or quarry.

I'm no Mouse 93, but I've shot 2 rifles with Nickel scopes.

I'd say the image quality was much better than Leupold, about the same as a Swearovski, not quite as good as a Zeiss Diavari V.

They are quality scopes, but the 2 I saw were probably a bit heavy (steel tubes -- don't know about other models).

Personally, I have a Leupold 2.5-8x on my .375 Ouch & Ouch. Great at 2.5x for close fast shooting, and at top magnification great for working up loads at the range (or a 300m shot).

JPK I am sorry I dont have any experience with Nickels, I noticed them on this thread : https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tp...980106804#980106804, but I remember that someone on AR mentioned that Nickel got a top evaluation on a comparisation testing with Swaro and big Z some years ago...I have a Zeiss and Docter optics on my rifles, but would go for Nickel if I would looking for a new one - I guess they have rather apealing selling mannors (no midman) without that aureola of Swaro and Z - nonetheless there is a 30 year guaranty - offcourse dont hold my tongue for it Wink - after all its your money beer

Thanks for the help, I had a lot of sifting through for replies. Since I already have a Model 70 in .300 win mag for my "plains game" rifle that I take. The .375 was mostly for hunting in the states and not in Africa. I think I will get a 1.5X5. With a heavy duplex or maybe get premiere reticle (whenever the start taking orders again) to put a heavy cross hair down to a dot.

Thanks

I have Bushnell Elite 3200's on three rifles:
375 H&H, CZ550, 30-06 Mark X, and a CZ 452.

I use the same scope on all rifles, so I know the controls in my sleep, or just waking sleep.

While I'm not sure, I suspect a 375 H&H might make a decent home defense rifle, given the right layout, and, no fear of shooting through...

s
PS
I picked these scopes for price, features, clarity, at a massive scope show, at our local gun store.
I had a chance to do side by side comparisions,
and, for target, etc. the 3-9 zoom was great, and for game, the lower settings where crystal clear...

I think the scope you must install in yor 375 depends on several factors, including the type of hunting you are going to do, the specific rifle and mounts ...
In my first 375 I had a leupold 1.5-5x20, and it is an excellent choice, to hunt in the african bush. But if you are hunting in a more open country, you need a more powerful scope. I installed a leupold european 3-9x40 later in my 375 and moved the 1.5-5x20 to my 404. This one, 404, it's custom made on a winchester M-70 action. In this action if you use talley mounts the leupold european cannot be easily mounted, meanwhile the straight tube of the 1.5-5x20, can do it easily. Those are examples that indicated the relativity of the scope choice in this caliber.

I would echo the sentiments for a Swarovski 1.5 x 6. You'll be ready for the short shots and the 6x can easily have you ready for most anything that you'll need in Africa.
The scope itself is remarkable in terms how it will hold zero even under brutal conditions. Your gun will get thrown around like you can't imagine when in the back of a Land Cruiser as it slams into the rough back roads on safari, especially when you're heading in after a long day in the bush. You'll cringe as your gun gets shaken, but you'll smile later when you see it still shoots true.
I have Swarovskis on two guns that I take to Africa, and after 21-days of brutality at the hands of my wild-driving PH in Tanzania, the guns were still dead on after I got home.

One major consideration is whether you will be using the rifle in low light situations. If so the 1-1/2x5 Leupold is pretty dark.

During the past 19 years I have used a 1-1/2x5, 1-3/4x6, and 2-1/2x8 on my various .375's. I have used them from Colorado to Africa, chasing a lot of different game. None of the three were bad, but if it were me, I would get either a Kahles, Swarovski, or Leupold with a range of about 1.5x6, the final choice of make depending on budget. They will all be brighter in low light than a 1.5x5 Leupold, have enough magnification for game at any reasonable range that you should use a .375 at, and have low enough magnification on the low endfor heavy brush hunting.
