Very soon I will be taking possession of my 404 J and I’ve begun to look for cleaning gear. Surprisingly I can’t find a source of brushes or jags to fit ? Ideally I’d like a bore snake as well the kit to fit a rod but, to date I haven’t discovered a supplier. Can anyone help me with this problem ? Surely you other 404 owners clean your barrels ?

You can just use a 44/45 caliber brush. It'll squeeze down to 423 caliber nicely.

I don't always clean my 404's barrel, but when I do, I do what Surefire7 does. What are you getting? DRSS

As a lefty my options have limits. I really wanted a Dakota but they wouldn’t talk to me after the first e-mail for some weird reason. So I bought a Mauser MO3, synthetic stock and kickstop fitted. It’s a working gun.

I too just use 44 cal cleaning brushes to clean my 404J bore. For a jag I just use a Parker Hale yellow rod with a 30 cal jag and few wrappings of 4x2 cloth. I don't like the 'modern' brass brushes, they are too sparce and stiff in bristles. I had a spare 12 gauge PH bronze brush that has dense and soft bristles which I cut down with scissors until a nice fit in the 404 bore. This brush un-threaded from the wooden 12 gauge rod adapter then threaded straight into the PH yellow rod. Works nicely and also used it to clean my 455 Webley revolver when I had it. 44/45 caliber stuff fits the 404 bore nicely, as do 44 cal gas checks if loading cast for the 404J.

Thanks gents. I knew there had to be a solution. A couple of manufacturers suggested I use .416 brushes ?

You can use .416 brushes and mops, and use a larger or double patch, maybe use two patches, whatever is snug... Boresnakes are the best for evening pass throughs during hunts, oil the brush and keep the snake clean in a plastic bag..Everyone uses them these days they are the best thing since sliced white bread. I know a lot of well known gunsmiths that use them..Don't know why anyone would not recommend them. better than running a steel rod down a bore and washing out the throat when used improperly, anything used wrong probably isn't good. Why would a bore snake be worse than a 200 gr, bullet going 3000 FPS down a dirty barrel...Most all varmint hunters today run a snake down the bore every 20 or 30 shots as accuracy decreases while shooting P dogs or chucks.
