What happened to these bullets........

Discontined in lieu of the Trophy Bonded Sledgehammers.

Federal owns Speer and Trophy Bonded.

Speer said they were too expensive to make and not profitable even at $4 per bullet.

Dan is correct...

the bullets had an EXTREMELY high reject rate, even before speer bought the product line.. seems that the process wasn't entirely worked out... had they used live tooling on a cnc lathe, and then thermowelded the tungsten in, it would have worked very well

funny enough, barnes is working on a somewhat like product, that they feel will be profitable, in their TSX bullets... as barnes is aware that their bullets, while excellent, are far too long on case capacity... not my opinion, rather it was in the trade rags about a year ago

I bought 150 of the 500 grain AGSs in .458 when Midway put them on sale soon after they were discontinuted.

So far, I've shot about 12 in load development in my Lott. Getting them to shoot to the same POI as my 500 grain A-Frames was a piece of cake. Got both shooting about 2,225 fps. This will be my main "heavy" battery when next I breathe the mopane smoke in an African bush camp. I figure at least some of the 142 I have left will be an asset fought over by my three sons when it comes time to settle my estate.

BTW, anybody here ever use the AGS solid on game? Just curious as to it's effectiveness.

I've used them quite a bit. The recovered ones were "reloadable." Where all this talk comes from about them separating I have no idea.

That has happened when they are fired into hardwood trees. I do not know if it happens on game.

Will probably has a few oak trees mounted in his living room......very dangerous trees!

I have fired some of the .416/400-grainers at 1/2" mild steel plate at 50 yards range, and the tungsten rod penetrated the plate, making a hole a few mm's in diameter, barely larger than a no.2 pencil lead. The rest of the jacket from around the core just bounced off the plate.

I can see how they might occasionally fail on heavy bone, or trees.

Like a sabot delivering a penetrator rod. For more like $5/bullet when I found a a box of 25. thumbdown

Not as accurate as a GSC FN either.

Before everyone craps on them, Recall that this was THE bullet that made the 458wm what it was suposed to be.

(due to short length for weight and thus no powder compression issues of old)

Modern powders have made this advance in bullets less relavent to the 458wm.

I had an AGS open like a shuttlecock in an ele bull on a departure shot. I was slightly above the bull so it probably encountered the pelvis upon entry. The core was lost but the jacket was recovered in the offside shoulder.

Good bullet but perhaps not the best.

Note: this was from a .458Lott w/2250mv
