Advice requested from those who have done it. I just picked up a very nice used Remington M700 in 300 RUM and have an idea to convert it to a 404 Jeffery. This is a stainless/synthic stocked model. Will need a barrel change, and does it need any rail work or magazine box work? Would like to change over to Gentry style 3 position safety, any problems encountered with this? Leave extractor as stock remington or replace with sako style? Or convert to mauser claw style extractor? Suggestions concerning a good smith to do the work? Any help with this project will be appreciated.

The 300 Ultra is a rebated 404, not a lot of metal left in the bolt face when you cut it back to 404 dimensions. A Sako extractor would further weaken the bolt face.

And most folks think that the Gentry unit is a piece of shit.

Other than that run with it!

It should feed fine. But if you really want it to feed throw away the Remington bottom metal and spend $250 for the HS Precision unit. It is designed to work with the Ultra/Jeffery family of cartridges (provided you buy the right model).

Well, the chance of finding a Winchester M70 in 300 RUM is probably not possible or affordable now that they closed shop. This might be a alternative. I suspect that the reason this showed up on the used gun rack was due to the owner having just a bit too much fun with factory loads. Watched two guys at the range a couple years ago and they were not having fun shooting these off the bench. Building up a reasonably priced 404 Jeffery does appeal to me. Just need to know how to go about it.

D99, Would opening up the bolt face be a problem? The 404 Jeffery operates at a lower pressure that the 300 RUM. ( when they build the CZ in 505 Gobbs, they also end up with a thinner bolt face, but it seems to work). Can you fill me in on the Gentry safety problems? How does changing over the bottom metal help with the cartridge feed? I thought it was due to the dimentions of the magazine box, follower and the angle on the feed ramp.

Boy.....we got a bunch of Remington pushfeed naysayers here!!!!!

Here's a thought.....why not just neck up the .375 RUM case to .423 and screw on a .423 diameter barrel for it.....better than a .404 Jeffery and no changes to the bolt face is necessary.

If you don't like that simply put the 404 Jeffery cases in the lathe and turn the case haeds to the RUM diameter!.....again....no changes to the Remington action!

FWIW, I took a push feed Model 70 in .300WINMAG and converted to .404J and did not have to change the bolt face. It fed and extracted cases made from .375RUM, Norma 404J and BELL 404J without a hitch. There really is only about .005" difference between the rim size of the 404J and a belted mag and factory "tolerances" didn't cause a problem. The big difference is that the .404J's body diameter is the same as the belt diameter of the mag.

Masterrifle,
correction, the big different is that the 404 ase diameter is larger than the belt diameter (.540 va .532 nominal)

I'm working on a 404 project and was able to find a mod 70 crf 300 rum on one of the auction sites earlier this year for somewhere around $600. It did take a lot of looking on my part because most of them were priced over $1k.
