Got my 500 Jeffery back from the stockmakers today. Beautiful wood, but still need to have the final polish done, and I'm getting the "Whitworth" cartouche removed as well. Question: What's a good jacketed bullet I can use for plinking (paper only)? Thanks, Garrett

N. Garrett, My condolences. With your whittled Whitworth, you better stick with cast lead and keep the pressures low. I'll be meeting Kevin Jenkins in Nashville in a few days to deliver the goods for 500 Mbogo-Mobogo number two.

So mean RIP and hijacking another thread lol! I'm planning to use Cast Performance bullets in my 500 Jeffrey with AA 5744 reduced loads for plinking. As far as an inexpensive jacketed bullet if you find some, let me know. I"m shooting Woodleighs and Barnes TSX bullets now. Definitely not cheap! Rip, Kevin Jenkins is a friend, and he's worked on several rifles for me. I don't buy that the Whitworth requires lower pressures than any other Mauser, and I doubt that Kevin does either. I've got Woodleighs and some Barnes solids (banded)...just need an inexpensive jacketed bullet to fool around with. Garrett

N. Not belittling the Whitworth, but rather any standard-sized (medium) M98 Mauser opened up for 500 Jeffery. I am sure the Whitworth is as good as any of those. But it is a medium. And I doubt that Kevin would recommend turning one into a 500 Jeffery. Whatever came over you? I can save you some grief if you will just let me dispose of that 500 Jeffery for you. (snicker) Have you been keeping up with Kevin's progress in medical school? He has a couple of months off. He has his machinery set up at Bubba's Skunk Works at Oak Ridge.

Hey Good Doctor B! Hijacking again or you? You mean doctor? I don't believe Whitworth's require lower pressures either. What is your source?

Excuse my butting Mr. Buli but I believe RIP is inferring that smaller actions (pick your flavor) require proportionately smaller cartridges or lesser operating pressures in order to maintain some semblance of a safety factor. This would be a statement of fact supported by very basic mathematical calculation. What the actual new maximum operating pressure would be in this particular scenario is certainly calculable if a few variables are known.

Rip, Haven't talked to Kevin recently, but he is supposed to be in town (Nashville) shortly. The gunsmith who did this Jeffery was the one he recommended. I plan to call Kevin this weekend. I tried to talk him out of going to med. school; not much luck there. Garrett

The hornady 570 gr isn't horrible sometimes opinions get all screwed up with fact. Yes, you can't build a full length 'flawless' on a standard 98 .. but HUNDREDS of 500 jeffe's have been built on them. the barrel shank and taper are close enough to be identical between a cz 550 magnum and a standard m98, and BOTH of those are larger than a m70/savage/remington/ruger .. and all of those are used to build 338 lapua. the lapua is hugely larger pressure than the jefffe the locking lugs and seats are simular in size and shape to the cz550 ... in fact, the cz 550 magnum IS wider and longer, but neither of those have jack to do with the bolt being thrust back by a firing case. the 500 jeffe DOES NOT require choping any locking lugs or seats. the mauser bolt is pretty darn close to the same diameter as the CZ In NO meaningful way is a commerical mauser weaker or compromised by the 500 jeffe ... in fact, the 500 jeffe was DESIGNED to be tops in that action. so, yeah, its a hijack, for no reason, other than to falsely infer that the 500 jeffe is somehow inferior to some flawless round one MIGHT could build on a CZ repeatative and boring opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Forrest, Somebody unloading Armor Piercing Incindiary so cheap because it is a fire starter hazard? Is it cheaper than the plain ball or simple AP? The black tip AP (Armor Piercing no I) seems to be the best target plinker of all the milsurps, in my experience, capable of about 1 MOA. Most accurate, weigh about 700 grains. How many cents per bullet on those AP? I am blocked from Pat's will look later. API is not the common sense plinker for dry areas of California. Nor is a standard Mauser 98 with a narrow-tailed-big-belly 500 Jeffery shoe-horned in. Ahoy!

API of any kind is no longer legal in CA ...

Don't the API bullets have to be resized before loading them? Also how are they on barrel wear? I plan to stick to Woodleighs, Barnes TSX and solids, and lead bullets for plinking.. AP or ball would be better in most cases than API. I never sized mine but my old barrel was a turned-down surplus BMG barrel. Yeah, they have to be single-loaded but we're talking cheap plinking. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.
