I'm trying to convince myself that I need/ want another big bore. I have a 375H&H that I shoot well and a handy little 45/70 Guide Gun. I have the opportunity to trade into a newer and as-new controlled feed Model 70 in 458WM.
I'm probably not headed to Africa, but trying to convince myself that I can use this for more then rabbits and squirrels. I'm usually either relatively recoil resistant or not very bright, but once had a Rem Custom Shop 700 that abused and beat the stuffing out of me. I'd appreciate any comments one way or the other.

Can never have too many big calibers. I own (2) 458's. Only one has been to Africa and the other will not ever make it in all probability. I convinced myself I needed it because the price was right and I could always load them down for deer here in the states. Bottom line - if it makes you happy, BUY IT. Can always find an excuse to use.

.458s are useful on lesser game with lighter bullets.

Inexpensive (relatively speaking) cast bullets are widely available, so you can shoot it frequently.

Finally, the .458 is a better overall round than the .45-70, although the rifles so chambered tend to be heavy.

With 300 and 350 grain TSXs the .458 will crowd into .375 territory. There's a lot to do in that place.

remington 405s are cheap (comparatively) and if you keep under 2000 fps, fun to shoot...

I had one and it was a good rifle. it's just the right weight for the 458 win mag and there is just something about the 458 that will make me buy another in the future. one advantage to the bolt gun is you can use splitzers. one of my favorite bullets was the 450gn aframe. never got a chance to use it on game but it was plenty fun at the range, especially when you start blowing through tree stumps

I am very happy with mine.
Chambers anything from flat nose solids to Impala spire points.
The only thing I would change would be an extra round in the magazine.

Accuracy is superb and reliability cant be faulted. For an out the box factory rifle you will battle to beat the M70 at twice the price.

I wouldn't worry about an extra round in the magazine so much, unless you are culling ele or buff. The main thing is getting the most out of the rifle.

My two cents? I'd certainly rechamber a 458 Winnie to either a 458 Lott or a 450 Rigby//460 Weatherby. The Lott would be easier, same boltface, change boltstop and magazine adaptor. The Rigby//Weatherby would lose a round in the magazine but would allow one to hunt with trajectories similar to the 375. PLeny of nice bullets.

The rechamber job is if one wants to get a 480
grn bullet over 2300 fps mv. The 458 Win Mag
gives the nitro express traditional 2150 fps mv
with the sames bullets as used in 450 NE double
rifles. For non-Africa use just down load it and
know you're never under gunned.

If it helps you convince yourself; your .375 is a medium and your 45/70 isn't a heavy by the usual definition. There-fore it isn't a question of getting "another big bore" but of getting one at all. What if someone asks to see your big-bore and you don't have one? The embarrassment could be fatal. Sure you can fake a choking fit and rush out of the room, but that only works once. Wink
