I have a couple of the Ruger #1 tropicals, 375H&H and a 458 Win mag. The scopes I finally mounted was the Leupold scout scope in the QRW rings. The eye relief is great, I had originally tried a 2x7 on the .375 and off a bench it seemed like the rifle was recoiling so fast that I was dodging the scope to keep from getting bitten. With the scout scope at 2.5x the field of view is great, plus it's easy to shoot with both eyes open and see everything. I like the setup so well I also did the same thing on my little 7x57 1a JJK

What a shame that Leupold don't make the VX2 1-4 on the same tube as the 2-7x33 Or for that matter that no-one seems to offer a true 1-4/1-5/1-6 x 32/36 scope. A Swarovski Z6i 1-6x36 would be a superb scope for a .375 or .416 as well as alot of medium bore double rifles and single shots IMHO. Yes I have asked them and they said they would look into it, but no news yet (not holding my breath )

I too would have to recomend a vx3 1.5x5. Ive used one of them and a number of the varixIII 1.5x5s and they been bullet proof for me. I do have a 1x4x30 trijicon and its a great scope too. Probably nothing faster to use. Only thing is i havent had it long enough or on a gun hard enough kicking to really test it but if its a typical trijicon product im sure it will hold up to about anything

Wasn't aware they did a 1-4x30. I'll have to look into that. IMHO a DG scope needs to go down to 1 power, but a lot of versatility is lost by restricting the objective diameter. A larger 36mm objective would be preferable on a bear rifle, for example.

No, not always, as the largest bears here in BC and in Alaska, are usually found in dense, soaking wet bush and the larger scopes get more easily entangled in this foliage. However, the real problem is that the larger objectives are more prone to being soaked with ambient water, from wet brush and rain/snow and this your scope is useless when you need it most. My custom purpose-built Grizzly defence rifle is a P-64 Mod. 70-.375H&H with a McMillan stock, 20" sts. Classic bbl, Gun-Koted and with Recknagel firebead skeleton sights. It has Leupold QRW bases, opened to 8-40 crews, epoxied on, QRW rings and a Leupy 2.5x Compact HD scope and is ideal for it's intended uses. I have packed a LOT of rifles in bear country as a part of my employment and used many scopes. I have 20, 32, 36, 40,44 and 50 mm objectives on the approx. three dozen scopes I currently have and the little Leupy is just fine for a bear rifle and rides under my arm when I am packing my rifle so it is protected from water, etc.
