Elephants and Ivory
True tales of Hunting and Adventure
John Alfred Jordan

"His name was John Alfred Jordan, and he was one of the great African adventurers in the early days of his century. That name is almost forgotten today. Certainly it is never mentioned in the same breath as that of Karamojo Bell, or F.C. Selous, or Pondoro Taylor, or Deaf Banks, or Arthur Neumann, or James Sutherland-but there is a reason for it.
They were all legitimate hunters for all or most of their careers.

Jordan was an ivory poacher."

An extrordinary read. In one chapter he tracks with cold fury and relentless revenge the leopard that killed his pet terrier. The beauty of it's prose reminds me of Edward Stewart White.

Just missed a copy of this in an on line auction. I've found this the hardest to get of his tiles in this part of the world.
Not so sure you could class Pondoro as a legit hunter ? Appears to me he was a real scallywag !
