Gentlemen,

I am trying to remember the name of a film, I think it was made in the 1970s, concerning circa 1830/40s American exploration.

It was a true story about a mountainman hired to guide / part of an party exploring the Missouri or Mississippi River upper tributaries. The party had a big wooden boat, shaped like Noah's ark, which they dragged across watersheds as best as they could, plus canoes etc. I particularly remember the 'ark'.

Anyway, while scouting ahead of the main body, with two or three others, he is mauled by a grizzly bear and badly injured - broken arm, a leg etc. The other scouts assume he is dying but he is 'taking his time about it'.

They are well inside hostile indian territory, so they leave him. He does not die, but patches himself up the best he can and hides from the indians while he mends. He hunts down the other mountain men who abandoned him and, while getting his revenge, has quite a few adventures.

The film stated the mountain man was eventually killed, and scalped by indians, 5 - 10 years after all these incidents happend.

I have a feeling it was after the Lewis & Clarke era, although I could be wrong.

Any ideas what the name of the film was?

I seem to remember reading an article in Readers Digest, waiting for a dentist's appointment, about this tale also.

John Huston was the boat captain - "A Man in the Wilderness".

Great movie, virtually no spoken dialogue.

I love it.

The lead actor was Richard Harris. He was outstanding in it.

I believe this was based on the legendary life of Hugh Glass. If you google him you will find the stories.
