Is this book worth the money?

Did anyone like it or find it helpful?

I feel like I got the shaft with another Dangerous game rifle book that I bought and do not want it to happen again.
IMO,a rifle book author should stick to a specific topic or area and not try to touch on everything.

Yes it is worth the price in my opinion if you shoot a double rifle. Good loading data and lots of detail explanation on cartridges and guns. Mr Wright is a good writer and has lots of experience...i found it a good read.

Thanks Cal.I wonder what the author will talk about. Will it be shooting itself as it applies to any firearm or something else like loads, cleaning etc... What does the author specialize in?

Graeme has forgotten more about doubles than most of us, including myself, will ever know. He covers all aspects of pressure, loading, reloads, powder choice, etc... Some of Graeme's ballistic data was done shooting at my cabin in AK. You can't go wrong on this one.

Shooting The British Double Rifle

A superb read and reference for anyone interested in double barrel rifles. This book is not just another genre book filled with nothing but pretty pictures and superficial information. The reader of Graeme Wright's book will find the full breadth and depth of the subject presented in every detail. This is not surprising. Wright is not a dedicated gun writer looking to turn out as much material as possible from what little information can easily be had. Graeme Wright, a commercial pilot by profession, is passionate about double rifles and this work is a result of his extensive research, testing, and information gathering. He discusses the cartridges, the loads, shooting the rifles, accuracy, velocity, and regulation of double rifles. He then provides guidance for problem solving and general tips for shooters of double rifles. He includes pressure and pressure tests, discusses damage to double rifles and finishes up with a very in-depth discussion of Paradox and ball-and-shot guns.

Unlike rifles with only one barrel, double rifles must be "regulated" to get both barrels to shoot to the point of aim. Double guns invariably give best results with the particular load they were regulated with at the time of manufacture. But what if a gun was built 50 or 100 years ago and the load it was regulated for is no longer available? The solution is to work up your own loads, adjusting components as required to get acceptable results. Up till now there was nowhere to turn for anything more than a starting point for such a process. But Shooting The British Double Rifle is filled with extensive reloading data to help shooters approximate original performance for every major British double rifle cartridge produced. Graeme Wright walks us through the process of loading for and shooting double guns and, based on what we see downrange, suggests what we should change to get the bullets to converge to a proper group.

The book consist of 288 pages of discussion, tables, and illustrations. This 3rd edition is greatly expanded and adds considerably more information to that provided in the 1st and 2nd editions.

Chapters are:

1. Cases
2. Primers
3. Powders
4. Projectiles
5. Full Nitro Loads
6. Nitro For Black Loads
7. Black Powder Loads
8. Shooting the Double Rifle
9. Accuracy
10. Velocity
11. Problem Solving and General Tips
12. Pressure Test Information
13. Damage to Double Rifles
14. Paradox Ball and Shot Guns

Appendixes are:

1. Services and Component Suppliers
2. British Cartridge Dimensions
3. Extract from old ammunition catalogs
4. ADI - Hodgdon Powder Table
5. ADI Comparative Burning Rates Chart
6. Big Game Rifle Club Rules and Competitions

You asked for opinions and all of them were favorable. But you seem to already have your mind made up. If the book is not for you then, simply put, don't buy it.

WTF? Confused

George, you ask for opinions on the book. When they are favorable, you say you'll pass. When they are negative, you say you'll buy. Then back and forth just to be contrarian. Did you run out of meds?

Alright, I'm going to say what we are all thinking here. With all the discussions of gun control and people with mental issues having access to guns, well ... here is the poster boy!

I'm stating right here for the record, when Fox News is reporting from Quebec about the loon with a gun, and all the neighbors are saying "but he was such a nice and quiet fellow" I'm going to say "B.S. I told you so"!

Todd:
Good day, mate.
From reading shootaway's posts I'm convinced he is of the mindset to jerk people's chains. It may be due to Agent Orange or LSD (if he's in his 60s), psychotic disorder, poor upbringing, low self esteem, or this may be the only way he can get attention (we teachers have known for decades that kids behaving poorly is because bad attention is better than no attention--to some, anyway). Of course, my knowledge of personality disorders is limited.
Cheers,
Cal
PS. Or, in layman's terms, maybe he's just an ass hole.

Mike, you are 100% correct. That's why on several posts, I told George that I want first dibs on the Searcy as soon as he pronounces it defective. That or after he pronounced the barrels worn out after shot number 50 or so!

Cool

Cal,it is unlike my character to call anyone names.I may have fun with people but that is it.I do not know what it is but I seldom come across people who have much class and good character traits. Most people want to belong to some group and behave in a way as to be accepted in this group and I believe you are one of them.I thought I might return the attacks I got from these guys by giving them a taste of there own medicine,at their own level, but it is something I am not known for doing.
I see you have books to sell and a web page and guns you are trying to sell and trying to be part of some gun thing and you are trying to be popular with some by bashing me.This is common and I have seen it before.

I do not have any comments on the book because I have not read it.
I was thinking of buying it but was worried that I might be disappointed just like I was with the Van der Walt book.
I started to ask questions and wanted something very specific about it that I hoped would convince me to buy the book.I got none.I read about the OSR thing but I am not really worried about my rifle for whatever reason.I said I will save my hard earned money-whoopi doo! I am still off on buying it because I feel that I have plenty of shooting experience myself and it would be a waste of money. As far as loads and pictures of nice doubles are concerned,I do not need any.

George

Why did you feel like that with Van der Walt's book ?

I have read it from cover to cover, it's not all to my taste but some good info in it and it covers some things not covered by others.

It's a good reference book to have on the shelf.

Graeme Wrights is more specific, being DR related.

I felt that there was nothing in it that interested me.
I like Taylors book and I am only half way through it.There is info in it that I have not come across anywhere. All the popular cartridges at the time the hunters that used them including Taylor himself. The experiences he had with the maunufacturers at that time.Very indepth and in detail. Also fascinating stories about there use in close encounters in Africa that I never read or heard of before. His opinion on bullets made by the different manufacturers.Rifles and calibers suited to all specific applications, their handling characteristics etc...Tons and Tons of info and experience you will not find on the web or elsewhere.I am looking forward to reading the chapter on marksmanship.
