what is your opinion about 410 slugs for puma or wolf protection? my m6 scout 22/410 shoot them very well att short range upp to 50 yds and penetration on paper seems to be good.

I'm a bit puzzled about what you mean by "protection". Do you mean protection of cattle or livestock -or protection of yourself? (I assume you mean from a cougar since I rather doubt that wolves attack people in your area and, in any event, a wolf is unlikely to give you a close shot - and, yes, although I'm from NY where we don't have wolves anymore I have spent over 20 years hunting in Canada in wolf country and do know something about wolves) A 410 slug loses enormous ME within 50 feet. I would not like to try to "stop" (forget "kill")an angry cougar with a 410 if he was attacking. In fact, to be truthful, a 40 S&W would serve as well, if not better. I yield to no one in my liking for the 410 (A Win.42 was my first shotgun as a very young teenager and I'm 77) but it just isn't what I would want to try to kill a cougar with at any range. ( I never tried to kill a whitetail deer with a 410 slug.in the days when we had little game law enforcement (Our property was in isolated country) Does that tell you something? JUst my thoughts.
