I'm not sure one is better than the other. The 11-48 is recoil operated and I believe is easier on cases, but mine requires loads that match factory pressure and velocity levels to operate reliably. The 11-48 hasn't been made since about 1963 and as such it's very hard to get parts for them. The 1100 is gas operated and if it is not currently in production, and I don't know if it is or not, it's still many years newer than any 11-48 and parts should be more readily available.

The 1100 .410 is still available and comes with choke tubes now. Remington Model 1100 Autoloader Sporting Shotgun, 410 Gauge, 27", 3" Chmbr, Blue Barrel, Rem Choke, Gloss Walnut Stock I have an older 1100 in .410 with a fixed choke that works well. I'd love to get a Rem-Choke barrel for it.
