I have a 458 socom bolt gun. Would it be possible to paper patch 452 dia 45 acp bullets for subsonic expanding bullets. Can paper patched bullets be safely shot through a can? JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

You will end up with baffle strikes, guaranteed. The sabot or paper patching will unravel/release in the can and may cause catastrophic failure. That is the basic reason why shotgun suppressors are few and far between. Tact is for people not witty enough to use sarcasm.

thanks for the reply, I wish I had built a 45 ACP bolt gun instead of a 458 socom. I am thinking about building a 45 ACP gun on a sako single shot I have with a 308 bolt, and thread the barrel the same as the socom. It should be quite and cheep to shoot. Even if you could shoot .452 bullets in your 458 SOCOM, any decent load with bullets of 230gr or lighter would most likely end up being supersonic. Typical 458 SOCOM subsonic loads use 500gr and 600gr bullets to keep velocities low while getting enough coming back to function the AR. Unfortunately, those bullets are made for higher velocities and don't expand much when launched subsonic. But since you are shooting a bolt rifle you don't need to use the really heavy bullets to function your rifle when shooting subsonic. You just need heavy enough for decent subsonic performance and soft enough to expand down range. Have you tried loading the Remington 405gr soft nose bullets to subsonic velocity? Many people load them to 1500fps or more in the SOCOM and then complain about how soft they are. But Remington makes them soft because Remington loads them in factory 45-70 ammunition for a muzzle velocity of only 1330fps. They are VERY soft, soft enough that they should still expand well when shot subsonic. And that is exactly what some shooters are doing. For example, here are some loads from the reloadammo website, one of them subsonic:

I will have to give the rem's a try. I have been thinking of taking a thin cutoff blade in my dremil or a small jewelers file and scoring the cone portion of the jacket JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

Do you have a Forster's case trimmer? Get one of their rifle hollow pointers for the trimmer. Set it up for a loaded Socom and run the drill/hollow pointer into the bullet nose. Or use a center drill of a size that will go in the Forster Trimmer. Packy
