Just getting started myself. Have built two solid higher end AR rifles ... one in .300 Whisper and the other in 6.8 SPC. Both are threaded 5/8x24 for a suppressor.

Local CLEO won't sign any transfer even though I already have a couple of NFA toys thanks to the previous sheriff. So I am beginning to work the NFA Trust route. Some good things just take time.

MS, an LLC or a trust will also do. I was going to go that route, but, in the end, did not need to.

This is the guy that I used for my trust.

I know some are using Quicken "Will Maker," but if something goes wrong (legally) with the document, I want an attorney to defend it - specifically the one that wrote it.

Spend a few extra bucks and CYA on this.

Re: LLC's and Corportations, you can open yourself up to tax filings there... go the Trust route, it's simple.

There are a lot of CLEO's. Sheriff, Chief of Police of your municipality or the Prosecuting Attorney, Superintendent of the State Police. IF you live inside a Municipality any of the these can sign. What county in WV do you live in? My Sheriff is happy to sign, he is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

I just read your address. Im assuming that its Kanawha Co. and its the Sheriff you are talking about. You have access to the State Police Colonel and the Prosecutors Office. In WV the Prosecutor is the CLEO of the county. At least ours likes to think so.

ranB, how about rating the relative effectiveness of your collection? You have a wide variety of calibers there. I also see you like long silencers as opposed to short and fat. Reason?

The effectiveness seems to be directly related to silencer bore and powder charge. I think my 458 socom is the loudest as it has a large bore and the cartridge uses a 20 grain powder charge. The AR-15 also adds much noise all itself. By comparison the 510 whisper has a larger bore and powder charge, but no action noise and the can extends 12” past the muzzle so it is a bit less noisy.

The silencers on the whispers, M-1 carbine, 308, 338 and the 458 are two point mounted. They extend over the barrel 4 to 6 inches to ensure a very sturdy mount. The 223, 22lr and 9mm all mount on the muzzle only and are about the same size as commercially available silencers.

I was able to compare my 9mm and 22lr cans to AAC units and found mine to be slightly inferior in noise reduction. My 223 can is about the same as a Gemtech (not sure what model) I compared it to a few years ago.

The larger cans you see were made that way because I am a beginner as a silencer builder and wanted to ensure they worked well. I was unable to find much info on baffle design when I first started to make them back in 2000, so I went for some extra volume.

I would rate them from loudest to least noisy in this order.

WASR (not shown). Lots of noise from gas vent.
AR-15 458 socom (subsonic)
Makarov 9x18 blowback operated (subsonic)
Browning HP 9mm (subsonic)
338RUM
308WIN
AR-15 223
M-1 carbine
Encore 510 whisper (subsonic)
AR-15 300 whisper (subsonic)
Contender 300 whisper (subsonic)
Savage 338 whisper (subsonic)
Nagant revolver with 9mm can (subsonic)
Buckmark (subsonic)
P-22 (subsonic)
Enfield 45 acp (subsonic)
10/22 (subsonic)
Marlin 22lr (subsonic)

I cannot afford a proper noise meter so this makes my estimates highly subjective. I have also never shot them all on the same day as I have to leave WA to use them. The WASR and 458 socom are not safe to shoot suppressed without hearing protection under any conditions. I believe the rest are as long as I am not under weather protection.

The longer barrel of a rifle makes a huge difference when comparing the same ammo and silencer. For example, the Marlin bolt gun using 22CB (primer only) unsuppressed is quieter than the suppressed P-22 using standard velocity ammo.

Ran,
Here's a "cheap" analog, to 126 DB, but i expect the impuse would render it to be more of a directional

and here's a more spendy digital, to 130, that reads and sticks peak

Al Paulson's book, Silencer History and Performance claims that a microphone needs a minimum 20 micro second rise time to accurately determine the noise level of a firearm. The second one you listed had a response time of 125 milli seconds, about 6000 times slower.

I suppose they might be able to tell me that one is louder than the other, but not if they are safe to use without hearing protection.

Suitable noise meters and microphones are about $3500.

What action? Whose barrel? 1-8 twist? Looks nice. I have an AR and contender in 300 whisper (SSK) but have been lusting after a bolt gun for a while. There is just no substitute for a good bolt gun.

I spent far too much getting my savage 10 fcm rebarreled to 338 whisper ($900) and do not want to pay the same for rebarreling a 300 whisper.
