Well, I ordered a set of the modern warfare goggles.. made by jakk's plastic. Its digital, and suposedly a 50ft range, with crap LEDS ...

i figured I'd test these out.. 63 bucks isn't going to break the bank..

should be here in a couple days.. and i'll try them with various illuminators i have

this is a right eye only monocle, that can be BW or green ... i have a number of light sources available.. lets see what they do..

my expectation is 100ft with decent IRE (infra red emitters) .. should be good enough to play around with.. certainly better than nothing..

reviews on the strap mounting system is not good, though.

what the heck, huh?

It will be interesting to hear how they work.

All these things that are basically childrens toys and not much money, and yet many did not exist at all 25 years ago and were essentially not available at any price.

I still get the warm fuzzies using LED flashlights.

for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

informal review 1
Modern Warfare 2 NIght Vision Goggles

first -- too small for an adult head .. if you have a 7 or smaller hat size, maybe..

if you have glasses, they need to be small

this has 2 built in light sources, none, small(invisible) and "long rang" ..array of low power red leds .. VERY low power.

digital ccd camera to pick up..

small lcd display and a mirror to fake bino vision

two display modes, green and black and white .. the BW is too bright, but functional. you loose range/contrast with green

no magnification - heck, no lense

sounds like i don't like it? well, it aint gen 3.

with onboard lighting, on a cloudy night, i can see over 50ft that is specified... focus? not so great, but heck...

in no light mode, its black

with low level, its okay to about 25 feet

with high setting, 65-70ft

and now add an atn ir450b4 .. 450mw lightsource for my digisight.. 99 bucks on special.

TRIPPLE the range.. a "sheperd" dog (fat coyote) was sneaking down the pipeline.. i saw his eyes at about 75.. some details at 60 or so, and could make out details, as he zoomed by (40 feet away) from 40' to 60+ yards .. totally lost him at about 70...

so, if you have a small head and a gen1 scope, this is likely a good pairing. about the same real range as gen1, and you aren't waving the gun around.

I'll tear these down, make a picatinny mount, and add a telephoto lens of some sort (likely from my ancient 35mm) and see what it can do.

i am surprised at how well they worked for 65 bucks... and if you have a scope, you likely have an IR flashing...

oh, btw, the ir450 was bright, just nothing to see from 80 to about 120 from where i was checking.. 60 yards? NO PROBLEM.

sitting in a hide, a bow/pistol blind, and a gen1 scope, you got it made

jeffe

Jeffe, call jeb at tactical hog control, I have right at 3k in my pvs7's. I've put many many hours on them an for the money, they would be hard to beat. Hand select and autogated features are not necessary imop.

I'm curious who is selling goggles for 10k and what model? The ones jeb uses are about 6-8k and one can buy Pvs 7's in thermal for around 8k.

what did i learn from this?

toy class stuff, even with tons of available light, just don't have enough power (cpe, focus, software) to go very durn far.
