Hello - just noticed this forum and it's fascinating.

In Britain moderators are very common and there is even one for the Beretta 68x O/U shotgun! It looks sort of weird - like an auto muffler.

I would like to get one for a .410 to use on crows that raid my garden and orchard.

Does anyone know of a moderator built to thread into a .410 barrel?

I don't yet own a 410 so that is very flexible.

George told me the Finns had created a successful 12ga supressor many years ago.

Shotgun silencers (moderators) tend to be long and bulky compared to others. This is because they use large baffles with a wide inside diameter to avoid snagging the shotcup as it opens, or use a perforated tube inside of the can to keep the shotcup closed. Both designs require a large volume to keep the noise down, even then they are usually less then 20 decibels difference compared to the 30-40 decibel reductions of modern pistol and rifle silencers.

While ATF approval to make or buy a silencer in the USA is a routine matter, you need to pay a $200 tax and live in one of the 37 states that allow civilian ownership without a license.

These states are; AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MO (with C&R), MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV, WI, and WY.

I do not know of any mass produced shotgun silencer in the USA. The can not be imported for civliian use. Let me know if you need more info.

the russians made a self-silencing shotgun round.. it had an internal diaphram, that the shot was before and the powder behind, that worked like a piston bb gun or "CASH" / captive bolt ... the diaphram went from concave to convex, throwing the shot.

Lets not forget the short lived Federal Ammo Urban Waterfowl loads and the 20"(twenty inch!) choke tubes that went with them.

These are the kiddies.

They are at their most effective with subsonic ammunition and what one might charitably describe as somewhat compromised in the handling department.... Big Grin

The fully suppressed .410 with the special ammo is very quiet, about like a PCP air-rifle.

You would probably be as well off finding a pnuematic shotgun. There are several respectable brands on the market and there's no paperwork.
