I notice a couple of collectors have a .416 Chapuis
I saw some at a gun show...it looks like a rimmed
version of a .416 Rigby...but not sure.
Anyone have any info on this .416 Chapuis?
Thanks,
Tom from Cody

I believe it is the 500NE 3 1/4" case necked down to 416 caliber by Krieghoff to provide Rigby performance at lower DR pressures. Seems to work well.

So are the 500/416 NE and the 416 Chapuis the same cartridge?

CIP only lists the 500/416.

I believe that is what Chapuis chambers for.
( The only Chapuis rifles in .416 I have seen were either.416 Rigby (standard) or 500/416. A-Square made some of the 500/416 with Chapuis headstamps as I recall.)

When the rumor-mill started about its (.416 Chapuis Rimmed)
production several years back--(early 90's)
the scuttlebutt had it being a .416 Rigby Rimmed--
I did not believe that came to be, perhaps it did, they would look different from the 500/416.

Found this, which seems to indicate it NOT is the same as the 500/416 3 1/4":

.500/.416 Nitro-Express 3.¼" (10,3 x 82 R)

but is a 3 1/2"

.416 Chapuis SAA 7240 (10,1 x 83,5 R)

http://www.ecra.info/main.php?main_cat=9&sub_cat=108

Guess , I should have looked at the rifles a tad closer-- maybe at a distance of-- 1/4"

In about 2004, I was looking at a Krieghoff double in 500/416 and the only data I could find for a similar cartridge was the Chapuis .416. So I sent Krieghoff a note asking if they might be the same. They were kind enough to send me the following drawing ... which leads me to think maybe they are:

Are they? (Interesting to get a drawing in French from a German company.)

Apparently A-Sq, produced the 1st run of the "rimmed 416' as early as '90 or'91,
for an "undisclosed" maker. it was based on the 3 1/2 500NE necked down.

Guess other than case length the real question is shoulder placement and configuration-- as to potential "difference".
