A friend and I are considering a brown bear hunt to Kamchatka in 2019 .However there does not seem to be much information on this hunt.
Has anyone done such a hunt and how did it go? Does anyone have recommendations on areas or outfitters.

A.DahlgrenWhat I have heard its mostly a ski doo hunt at least for the people I have talked to. Would love to see Kamchatka but I have put it off and will do a AK pen/kodiak hunt instead.

As Anton said it seems those hunts are conducted by towing the hunter around in a wooden sled which is a ass busting experience and when the bear is spotted the hunter is expected to jump out and shoot the bear.
My taxidermist that's been in the business for 45 years told me when Kamchatka opened they were receiving some big bears but in the last few years size has dropped way off. I think you'd be better off on the Alaska Peninsula or the better areas on Kodiak Island.

mark smithThank you for your replies Anton and Mark. The YouTube videos I have found confirm what you have written. The bears being shot look immature even to an amateur like myself. No professionalism among the guides .

FourtyonesixFrom past clients who hunted it when it was all the rage.
Running bears down on snowmachines. One shot his from a chopper with a Ak-47. Big bears at first but with their two bear limit and low price they pounded them pretty hard. Most all the equipment used was old military stuff and no money was being put back into the equipment so choppers started crashing, machines broke down etc. it was an adventure they said but not what they were hoping for. It was a cash the American check and run something down however you could.

I think the direct flight from ANC also put a lot of pressure on them as well. I assume that flight, which was dropped some years ago, is still not on the schedule?
FWIW, Blair has always pushed these hunts hard...

I have organised hunts in Kamtchatka, but haven't taken a bear myself.
Most hunting is done by snow mobile that's correct. However there are areas who do it in an ethical way, while others chase them down.
There are areas that still have good bears but it is true that many areas have been shot out.
In general I would say that hunting in Russia is a completely different hunt (communication, Food, equipment, guides) then in NA. If you don't see the differences as part of an interesting adventure, then it's much better to hunt in NA. I mostly enjoyed the hunts in former Sowjet countries but it's certainly not for everyone.

I hunted in the Koryak region on the Kamchatka Peninsula for Brown bears many years ago.
I shot a good bear but there was a lot of poaching in that area, and I agree with the description of the hunt given above, and will never do another hunt for bear in Kamchatka.

reddy375There are good operators in Russia also. I can organise a Kamchatka hunt for 13,500 incl. 1 bear, with the expectation that you will shoot a 8.5+ bear. Bigger always possible but no guarantee.
Posters here comparing Kamchatka with Top bear areas in AK should also mention that those AK hunts cost another 10K++!

Jason PI appreciate this thread! Interestingly, I looked at an offered hunt this Saturday at our local hunt expo. Me and my friend were considering it for 2019.
After these posts, I am fairly sure I will not do it.

jaegerfrankI hunted sucessfully for brown bear in Kamchatka. I shot my bear in the same camp as the Metallica gent. It was a very nice hunt and an absolute good experience. Only downside was the amount of time.

L. David KeithMy good friend and client returned recently from his Russian Bear hunt. They were out one hour on the first day when he shot this 10' Brown. It had been feeding on the carcass of another bear. All four hunters in camp shot great bears, but one was only 8'6" because it was a mountain grizzly color. Same guy had already shot a 9 1/2' bear. Camp was cabins with warm beds, hot showers and home cooked meals. Everyone shot at least one bear. the Russian hunt is $12,500 for 8 days. Second Bear is $4,000. Currently, my AK Brown Bear hunts are $24,500 (15 days in a tent) or $30,000 for 10 days on a yacht. LDK

You may contact the Norwegian Outfitter Mr Arnsten Østby or German Outfitter Westfalia Jagdreisen. They have both long reputation in Kamchatka.

AR MANI would not recommend westfalia jardreisen for any hunts after my experience with them last Hunt. They dropped the ball on a simple permit needed and won’t help you if anything isn’t on their outfitters side. I have heard very good things with Ostby.
