. An invitation from a hunting friend for a morning shooting crows on a bio gas plant where the crows come in a eat the maize that the plant is burning. We set up in the dark before first light - a net blind, 6 decoys some 35 yards out and the dogs at my feet. A bit of calling and it was not long before the first crows came in! The first one shot was put on a flapper pole with its wings spread as if about to land to add some movement to the pattern. We shot for a few hours and put down a respectable double figure bag. I was shooting a Beretta Silver Pigeon 20 bore with UK Eley fibre wad 6's. Got my finger pinched by one crow that was not quite dead when it hit the ground! A fun morning, great late winter weather and a decent bag of crows. We are hopefully going back next week to do it again! Decoying crows - a whole lot of fun! ![]() . I used to shoot crows on a friend's ranch in Cali. After a while they learned what my truck looked like and would clear the area when I drove up. If my truck was parked, the crows would not be within a mile of the place. I have a lot of crows on the farm here in Kentucky but they don't seem to hang around the house or barn so I've been leaving them alone. Sounds like a fantastic morning! Your setup with the flapper pole was spot-on - that movement really makes decoy patterns irresistible to crows. The 20-bore with 6s is perfect for these clever birds; enough pattern density without excessive damage. Those `finger pinches` from wounded crows are always a sharp reminder of their tenacity! If you're heading back, try adding a couple of floater decoys above the pattern - I've found the added dimension pulls in birds from farther out. Happy hunting next week! | |||
