Not just a west coast species, but as close as we get to the woodcock. These are plucky little rockets. They are not in dense timber like woodcock, but inhabit wet forest openings and bottomlands. We sometimes hunt them on old river channels that get wet and still have plenty of soft sediment for probing. Usually the only view you get is the zigzagging blur of a spooked bird flying off to safety. Excellent test of your shooting skills. Wilson's Snipe *pics* Who else hunts these guys? Not bad table fare either.

333, We hunt these in the UK, and there are occasionally places wherethey can be driven, but like you say I enjoy these best walked up on bogland or flooded pasture. In ireland they are shot over setters in the peat bogs or coastl rough ground which is awesome fun. My first time out after them I shot 43 shells in a day for nothing!! I got a bit better after some practice but not a great deal better!! I like them best cooked over hot coals then sprinkled with sea salt and lemon juice.

Handsome little buggers! We have seasons for both Virgina and Sora rails, but I've not yet chased them specifically. I think I'll make a point to change that next year! Neat pics; thanks for posting! KG ______________________ Hunting: I'd kill to participate.

I don't usually go after just snipe, but I do shoot a few during the duck season. This is usually during the early season and during a migration. You can get a few shots if you are in the right place. We have Sora's, too, and I normally try and get after them a few times each Sept. It's a good workout for the dog and me.

Snipe are tough little birds. We have a neighborhood park(about 5 acres) here right in the middle of a subdivision. A small spring creek runs right through it. When temps here really drop below zero there will be 5 or 6 snipe hanging out there living along the banks. My setter's get to point them but there's no hunting allowed. I would have figured the snipe would have migrated further south but there they are hanging out at 5000' elevation in SW Montana in January!
