It's that time again: the Snow Goose Conservation season. It opens this weekend but we will start hunting next weekend on the 8th. Here's the details: Location: near Stuttgart, Arkansas License required: none, only a free confirmation number. Call the AR G&F to get one. Limit: none! Snow, Blue and Ross Geese only (no dark geese...period) No plug in your shotgun: electronic calls: hunt till sunset. Food, lodging, guides and decoys funished. Cost: $200 per person, per day. Limit of Hunters: 6 per booked hunt. You may drive to camp or fly into Little Rock, AR and rent a vehicle. Airport pickup available. Mack's (duck hunters heaven) is located in Stuttgart. Saturday was a good day even though it was warm, sunny and very windy. Here's my take on things: a pile of Snow's, Blue's and Ross Geese!  This is a mature Ross Goose I saved for mounting.  He must have been from France as he kept circling high over head with no commitment to landing. As soon as I realized he might be from France, I put on my French Zouave hat and here you go! The new Benelli Improved-Modified choke I bought at Mack's Prairie Wings combined with Winchester 3" BB's did the trick at high altitude. We wound up with 42, but cooler temps and cloudy days are in the forecast. Currently, we are hunting one flock that we estimate to have over 50,000 Geese in. There are most likely a half million birds in the county right now. LDK, That goose hunting is a blast. Stuttgart is capital of wing shooting for a reason. What are you using for decoys - full bodies or rags? How many are you setting out each hunt? | |||

bluefin, we use Last Look decoys. They come in flat sheets that are color painted. You bend and staple the bottom and one cheek. They resemble shells. We set out as few as 200 and as many as 4,000, depending upon the circumstances. Right now we have over half a million geese and growing by the day. My bud shot a 5 shot swing in a flock this morning and 25 fell out. He was wore out after he picked all of them up. We've been grilling and frying them lately and I have to say they have been excellent table fare. One guy calls them "Rib-eyes from the sky." We're planning on using lifesize "stuffers" next year. I'm going to mount a dozen and give them a try. I was returning this weekend but another group we have wants to bring some friends so I'm going to wait until next week to go back.
