Black Duck Drake VS Mallard Female.....this pic is for waterfowlers west of the Mississippi who do not get to see very many Black Ducks in their flyways !!!

Black Ducks are probably one of the smartest and wariest of all North American waterfowl. Calling them really does not work...but...they do make mistakes early in the morning Smiler

tu2 Black ducks can be very wary around here but their numbers are fading slowly. They respond to calling if they're flying with Mallards and if your where they want to be, they work with grace into the timber or decoys. Use a Widgeon whistle if they won't respond to mallard calls. It will work sometime when nothing else will. How about the Mottled/Mexican/Florida species? Would like to see similar pics of those.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Last one of the bunch that you asked for is the Mexican Duck ... also known as the Mexican Mallard. This is the drake in this pic which I shot in Los Mochis, Mexico.

Please note that the Mexican Duck is NOT a Mottled Duck.

This is a sub-species of Mallard....and if someone is telling you that this is a Mottled Duck sub-species then I am afraid they are misguided souls and need some direction Big Grin
