Do the ducks wear lipstick down there too?

Wink

Having a hard time finding a flight I can work with, bud. I'll give you a holler later.

Duck hunting in short sleeves, in sunshine and drinking cold beer with you friends is a lot more appealing than fighting ice and snow for a few birds. Of course, you don't need to take 4 ice chests to keep your drinks cold.

Shooting was a little slow that day, we killed 20 Redheads, 9 Pintails, 4 Widgeon and 1 Canvasback. Only 3.4 ducks per person but it was lots of fun.

Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

Great pictures Kamo. Until now I thought my hunt this morning was cold.

ALLEN W. JOHNSON - DRSS

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Kinda wish you wouldn't post pictures of beer and shotguns Boss.

Beer and outdoor recreation is pretty common here too. All, and I mean 100% of Bristol Bay recreational fatalities are alcohol related. The pattern is obvious, stay sober and the Search and Rescue squad has little to do.

We are actually real careful and have taken guns and ammo away from people that seem a little out of hand.

As an aside and a serious question: Aren't alcohol problems more prevelent in Alaska than in other states? (Just something I seem to recall.)

First off, sorry about the hijack Kamo. I sure appreciate the good pictures, (something you're known for and we expect of you.) The cold climate waterfowl hunting is something everyone needs to experience as the cooler temps add an obvious sense of urgency to the birds behavior.

We're just talking here right?

You're quite probably right about the booze and AK. A sad and then a funny hunting story I can relate; A few years ago a group of local young fellows left here to head up river moose hunting on a 32' commercial fishing boat. After a night of binge drinking on the boat, one young man went overboard while going number 1 and it took several days to recover his body. They woke up in the morning late and spent sometime wondering where "So and So" was. No reason for there to be booze on that boat in any quantity. They were there to hunt, they all had tables to contribute to and booze wasn't a part of contributing.

The funny story is about the guy that asked some friends to tow his hunting skiff behind their commercial fishing boat up river to hunt with. He flew in to the river location a day or two after they left and found them without his skiff. Apparently they had got right after the drinking on the way up and didn't notice when the skiff sunk behind the fishing boat and was being drug across the bottom of the bay! When theres fine examples of sportsmen finally did notice the tow line pointed straight down into the water they headed for shore, tied the sunk skiff to a tree and proceeded on with the trip. They were concerned enough about their friend to meet him at the agreed upon location and tell him where they'd last seen the wreck.

Seriously.

I hear about Alaskan stories more than other places since I live here, but in hunting related accidents alcohol seems to be a consistent contributing factor.

I think you'd find the majority of Alaskan outdoorsman to be responsible, sober family men. There are exceptions to the rule. I do drink and occasionally drink beer while fishing. Depending on who I'm with and what the circumstances are I may not drink at all and even not have alcohol in camp.

I'm not sure, but I think one of those posted basic rules of hunter safety is to not mix firearms with alcohol or drugs.

Sorry again Kamo, I sure like to see the images of interesting and different locations.

Man that looks cold. Is that salt water? The boats must take a beating.

Great photos. When I was young I hunted in that weather. That was my first love since turning 16. Didn't give it up when the boat fliped in a noreaster and the Helo plucked us off the rocks ,off Revere. I did give it up when the man that took my spot on a saturday that I couldn't go because of work, drowned when the boat fliped off the Lynn causeway too Nahant.
I still love the ducks though. Check them out every day with the binos.

Great pics

Some of the best duck hunting I have had was going out and stomping a hole in the ice and sitting on a bucket next to the hole. Of course, I had some "issues" retrieving them, until I learned to drop them either in my hole or behind me... Dang near killed my poor lab one time like that as it took me 30 minutes to get the boat out near her. She still likes fireplaces from that experience.

Northern birds looking for a quick drink sure are easier to decoy than the early season fellas...

From another hunt, chopping our way to the "spot" on a lake in southern MN mid-November got a little rough.

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy!

Thanks for the kind words and input.

No helos involved, but we have something in common. I almost died in Broad Sound, between Point of Pines, Revere and Lynn, where the Gen. Edwards bridge crosses. I also cut my teeth seaducking in Revere. If you still have any interest, shoot me a PM. Happy to get you out, if you've any interest. Wink

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
