Reverse migration of Snow Geese has begun in our area.

Greater Snow Geese are a sub-species which mainly winter on the Atlantic Coast of USA. They are a good 25% larger in size than the Lesser Snow Geese found in other flyways.

Mean weight of males:
Lesser: 6.0 lbs
Greater: 8.0 lbs

Some Greater Males can go upwards of 10 lbs. These birds are significantly larger from the ones hunters are used to in Mississippi and Central flyways.

Here is a mature bird taking some rest before starting the long journey back up north to the breeding grounds.

Lesser Snow Geese sub-species have close to 30% birds with Blue phase. Greater Snow Geese however have 0.1% birds with Blue Phase....here is a nice mature Blue Phase Greater Snow Goose....some biologists believe that such a bird (Blue Phase Greater Snow Goose) is a Unicorn and does not exist...well I have news for them Smiler

The dark bird in the mix is a juvenile.

Putting on some fat before a long journey up north.

There was only 1 Blue Phase Greater Snow Goose in this Gaggle of Geese Smiler

This B.c. canadensis (Atlantic Canada Goose) seemed a little upset with the snow geese Smiler

I've hunted Greaters in NC once. It was an outstanding site to see. We took Swans there too but they rank very low in the brain department Frowner Still a good hunt.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

The area I was in was Pamlico Sound. We flew in on my friends single engine and from the air it was a sight to behold. One morning the F&W boys were banding geese. When they fired the cannon net, the geese blacked out the Sun. Lots of ducks were there too.

I had heard the other day that some of the snow geese are coming north again through Saskatchewan already. I thought it was early especially since we have a ton of snow still here in Alberta. We kill a few snows in the fall in my camp but they don't come through my area as much as an hour or 2 east of me on the east edge of Alberta. Nice looking birds though and fun to hunt.

So do you guys hunt them in the spring also, or is that just the Mississippi/Missouri flyway?

I have been seeing lots of geese and swans here as well, for a couple of weeks now, but we don't get much in the way snows around here.

Maryland boys were still chasing them as of two weeks ago. Those birds must have been wintering in North Carolina. Here are the Spring hunting regulations for MD.

LA, AR, W. TN, MO, SD, ND, TX are all good for lesser Snows/Blues and Ross geese in the conservation season. We can use electronic callers, motion decoys (all types), shoot 30 mins after sunset, no limit, etc. Some of the best waterfowling left in the US.
