Last fall I was thinking of a new way to honor the birds we pursue while remembering a great season. After a few quick calls, I sent a grouse, woodcock and pheasant up to Bare bones mounts (http://www.barebonesmounts.com/) in Maine to give them the Dermestid beetle treatment.

The result has arrived and I could not be happier.

Atticus, that is stunning. Big thanks for sharing, both for the idea as well as the local link for a beetle guy.

I have some work for them, if they're taking on first time clients. Wink

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Very nice.....I'm fond of skulls meself. A quick boiling with Sal soda and then leaving them in the garage for a month gets them looking just like yours....I'm not sure what bug it is but some sort of hairy larval looking thing (not maggots) shows up with his buddies and devours all the remaining soft tissue.

Edit: I just looked it up and the critters that show up are in fact dermestid larvae.....I guess the message is: leave it and they will come. Big Grin

Leading off the display.....is Mink The Merciless....for added effect he cut the ears off and put a pack of cigarettes out on his back.

Next up is the specially "antiqued" GWT....looked a 100 years old the day I got it....well done.

Ah, "art school" Woodie.....with the paint-by-numbers bill and paste-on eye.....poor guy didn't deserve this treatment.

And who could forget the Uncommon Eider with a metal spike projecting from the top if his head.

And finally, the hoodie with severe neck issues...I think he swallowed a U-bolt somewhere in the marsh.

All these mounts of kills from early in my career are in transition to the basement, ne'er to be seen again. rotflmo
