I don't think I've ever seen a better looking duck than the pintail. We have them in the Miss. Flyway but I don't think their numbers have ever been all that great since I've been hunting compared to some others. The numbers today I think are even less than decades ago. I shot my first one in the 1970s and had it mounted..still remember the shot..it was moving fast and the third shot from a Model 12 did it. I still have it, with a greenhead on one side and a gadwall on the other. Glad I kept that one...you never know whether something you shoot will be the last one like it you see. You just never know.

Damn you, Collector. Have been on my drool/must have list for more than a decade. Have had 1, count it, ONE chance at a shot at a sprig in 12 seasons. I saw him flying directly overhead when I, lost in thought, was staring at the water under the boat; I saw the thing in the reflection in the water! By the time I looked up and got the shotty shouldered he was 50 yards out and off into the marsh. It would have been a gimme' if I was just paying attention at that moment. Damn it now that's gonna' be bugging me for the rest of the day! Great pics, dude. ______________________ Hunting: I'd kill to participate.

Kamo, Totally understand when that special bird is on your list and the shot you end up getting is a 50 yarder where the bird is hauling butt....so totally understand. Have faith, a nice bull sprig will circle you one of these days and land right in the decoys Norton, Redheads gave me the worst heartache...I can't tell you. Always wanted one but never could get a nice perfect bull. Ended up going to Laguna Madre and hand picked my birds landing in decoys. I will post pics in a separate thread. Light was horrible for the entire duration of the trip so excuse the not so fancy pics. Here is my redhead quad from that trip.

Kamo, you need to come to California to hunt pintails. They are a very common duck out here, and one of my favorites. Something like 90% of the continent-wide pintail population winters in California and Mexico. We're only allowed to take 2 per day out here, but on clubs with habitat that they like it is pretty easy to get them. This is the time if year that they are at their most beautiful plumage, at least when we can hunt them. **********

Kamo...looks like you got an invite for the Sprigs in Pacific Flyway...best place to get them...later the better as springs get longer in late January. Norton, it is done. Just put up the pics from the Laguna Madre hunt, hope you get a kick out of them. http://forums.accuratereloadin...4121043/m/8221029321 You basically fly into Houston. Hunting takes place on the Gulf.

Only problem is, my property isn't in an area that draws many pintails. Guys can shoot lots of them near to where we hunt, but they don't particularly care for riparian marsh, which is what my entire place consists of. Did shoot one yesterday, though. Nice long spike tail, too! *************

KG, ditto on what DLS said about the sprig; they generally like the open water flooded-rice type habitat as opposed to the natural seasonal wetlands type ponds... as we've discussed before, if you ever find your way out here to Kaliforny I'll take you on a hunt or two; I've got 2 clubs that are both marginal except in very specific types of weather, we also lease another spot or so every year, next year will be in the rice in prime sprig country... One of our clubs has a floater in the Suisun Bay, no good for puddlers but all the scaup/goldeneye you want to shoot, I did get a drake oldsquaw there once, VERY rare here in this part of CA.... Been pretty slow here this year with some exceptions, best to you.... Regards, Craig Nolan Best Regards, Craig Nolan

Appreciate the comraderie here very much; thank you, gentlemen. Craig, I know I've extended the offer for you to come hunt here, and it's open-ended. As far as me making it out to Cali: have gun, will travel! For 20 years or so I spent lots of time in NorCal (Bay area/Marin Co.), and would jump on a plane in a second to come hunt with you. If next season works for you, it works for me. Seriously. Thanks again, and best. KG ______________________ Hunting: I'd kill to participate.
