There are 4 sub-species of Mallards in the world right now (fifth one called Mariana Mallard went extinct couple of decades ago).

The nominate sub-species Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos is the mallard found in Europe and Asia.

Anas platyrhynchos conboschas is the Greenland Mallard...it does not migrate much.

Anas platyrhynchos maculosa is ours found in North America.

Anas platyrhynchos diazi is known as the Mexican Mallard and is found in Mexico (also southern Texas). The males of this sub-species do not have a green head).

Here are some pics of North American Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos maculosa) I took recently.

A Black Duck sneaked in with this group of Mallards...amazing how dark they are when compared to Mallard hens side by side.

I love shooting greenheads...most fun however with them is in flooded timber. They do some amazing acrobatics which you will not see them do otherwise.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
