We usually do not hunt fish-eating species like Mergansers and they get a free pass during the hunt. We have 3 in North America:

1) Common Merganser (Biggest one, called Goosander across the pond)

2) Red-breasted Merganser

3) Hooded Merganser (he is the smallest)

Now every now and then someone will shoot one for taxidermy as they make the most interesting mounts.

Some old timers like to cook them in a smoker so breast meat can be utilized if cooked by a person who is knowledgeable.

Every now and then some rookie hunter shoots them and tries to cook them....results are usually disastrous.

haha!

I've never tried to eat one.

They say people here ate them during ww2, but I supose they did not enjoy it.......

Laying them in milk is suposed to take some of the bad taste away from what I know.

I have a mount of a common merganser with a mink on its back. shot them both two years ago..

If it is yor mounts in great hunters 5 I wish to congratulate you! Very nice.

regards.

Thanks for posting collector. Pintails are my favorite puddle duck. Such graceful fliers.

@Goldeneye
Guilty as charged Smiler

@LDK
Agreed...Pintails and Canvasbacks are probably up there when it comes to graceful flyers.

@Norton
Try to hit the Gulf in second week of January...redheads will be beautiful and pintails will have long sprigs.

Magnificient birds! Pintails against the sky make a beautiful picture.

Eating a Merganser is like eating a spoonful of swamp mud!

Collector.....I'm planning on hitting the Finger Lakes in the next couple of weeks before they freeze entirely.....that's probably not all that far from you. Word is, the redhead and bluebill hunting can be pretty fair. Cool

They look like bullets zipping through the air when you see them in flight.

I would like to get a pair for the wall.
