Thinking of moving up. Any recommendations?

I hunt on the wide open Susquehanna River in Pa. My back is usually against a wooded island, with occasion I am totally wide open. Never in what would be a timber situation.

I currnetly use a Glynn Scobey metal reed and a Sean Mann express(20 yrs old).

Wish I could help you..........but mt best sounding calls are my cheapest. I'm not fond of the sound of high-end "competition calls". I have a $20 Flextone DR that sounds better than the $40 Buck Gardner that I wasted my money on......not that I wouldn't spend $150 on a call if it sounded better, I just don't think they do. I just ordered a Zink Power Hen that sounds great for $25.

I'd be interested to hear others thoughts though.

Only non-wood call I have is a Haydell's DR-85. It's a plain-Jane mallard hen call, but does sound pretty darn good. I prefer wood, for the soul of it, but this call is dang sure easy to use, blows wet (even after my 3 yo son has had his way with it), and is fairly loud.

The DR-85 is the prototypical beginner's duck call, costs $16 and sounds great....just lost mine a few weeks ago and will replace it next time I see one. It's one of those I was referring to in my above post.

I agree with Norton, sometimes the $10 call will sound as good as a $500 call. This year marks 41 years of chasing and calling ducks. I've collected many calls over the years and have used everything from Johnny Marsh (large, copper reed "open water" Reelfoot style) to diminutive "cut down" timber calls. One of my favorite cheap calls is a plastic single reed Rich N Tone. Not to say that my wooden Hambone, Heavy Duty, Chic Majors or Puddle Duck doesn't get to the blind, but high price doesn't always play the best music to a ducks ear. Right now I'm awaiting Bob Wiseman to finish one of his Long Pond calls for me in African Blackwood and Ebony. Here's an example of his work, and he is an artist:

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

A couple makes of excellent calls that us west coast waterfowlers rely on include Iverson, and JJ Lares. The Iverson calls are made from exotic woods, and have fantastic sound. The Lares call are more modern, made from different plastics, or acrylic, and also have outstanding sound. In fact, I think that Joe Lares' specklebelly call is the best one out there.
