Hi all

Does anyone have any suggestions for a top quality Dove/Duck hunt for Argentina in May? Hoping to stay in the BA area if possible.

Rgds,
K

I'm thinking about this trip and am figuring the finances.
I see it runs about $1800 or so for a 3 day hunt.
So if you dont mind me asking-----how much extra are we talking for shotgun shells? At $10/box are we talking another $500 to $600/day???

It is probably more like $11-$12 per box. The number of boxes is up to you. On my last trip, I shot about 120 boxes a day. This equates to approximately $1,400 per day for shells for me.

Any place you would recommend for a combo hunt?

The month is not important, just want to do both doves and ducks.

I think if you take the base cost and triple it and that is about the total cost. That is with a medium amount of shells, tips, fees, hotel in BA etc. More if you generally spend more. So if it $2000 figure $6000 or so.

I will let Larry answer as you asked him.

But you do know that the (best) dove and duck hunting is in different areas correct? Much of the dove is up around Cordoba of course, although there are others too, but the duck is more around Esquina or in Corrientes. To get in on (the best) of both is really not a big window of time, probably May through early June is my guess.

Chris:

Argentina Outfitters has a number of "areas" for lack of a better term. One is near a town called Florentino Ameghino. The estancia is in the middle of an agricultural area. We have killed time standing in the yard and shot over 10 boxes of shells each at doves. In addition, they have an place called Kono that is about a 2 hour drive from Ameghino . They have fantastic dove shooting there

I would highly recommend them. We are going for our 8th consecutive year in July.

Chris:

We made a DVD on our (my kids and myself)annual duck hunt in Argentina in 2010 (I think). It is complete with sound track and voice over. It will show what duck hunting is like down there. If you would like a copy, PM me an address and I will mail you a copy. I have a lot of them.

TexKD is right. Most of the commercial dove hunting is near Cordoba. There are other places to be sure. They may or may not be as good as Cordoba. Salta has more birds but not the same quality of outfits from what I understand. The fact they have more birds is irrelevant to me. I can't shoot any more than I am now shooting. My body won't tolerate more than 2,000 to 3,000 rounds a day.

We have duck hunted in 3 different general areas. These being the Entre Rios, the western Buenos Aires province and way down south near Necochea. While I have seen ducks in the Cordoba area, I do not believe it to be the best province for water fowl.

My final word of advice is to ask a lot of questions. There are some outfits that put you up in a hell hole hotel. They put everyone on a bus and may drive as much as 2 hours one way to get to the field and you stay there all day. Then have another 2 hours drive back. This ain't my idea of fun. Los Chanares, for example, rarely, if ever, takes you for a ride of longer than 10 minutes to the area you are going to shoot. You come in when you want to come in. Just tell the bird boys and they will radio a vehicle. In addition, rather than eating a sack lunch in the field, they take you back for an outstanding meal at lunch time.

Another thing to definitely ask about is the outfitters limit on ducks, some are at 25 to 30 per day, some limit the boxes of shells they give you.

See if they have perdiz hunting too.

One very good thing about the duck hunting is you can knock out your duck limit in the morning and then go hunt for perdiz in the afternoon. The perdiz is real fun. My bud Rick says " To heck with those ducks and doves (even though he is a BIG duck hunter), lets get after these perdiz." It is the max fun for him.

I visited as well as lived down there for awhile and did quite a bit of bird hunting. There is nothing like it in the world. The first few times I hunted down there I carried a Benelli auto. When I lived down there recently, I hunted "like a gentleman" using a Browning Featherweight 28/20 ga set or a Winchester M42 .410; and only fired a few hundred shells a day. Smiler

I cannot recommend an outfitter as I mostly hunted birds with the locals. However, I would strongly suggest using one of the outfitters recommended by memebers of the forum.

I would like to ask the experienced hunters.

I am trying to set up a Duck and pigeon hunt.
We are not interested in doves or anything else. We are looking to be able to shoot 50 birds per hunter per day. Say 25 ducks and 25 pigeons. Have any of you done this and can you recommend any outfitter and lodge that can comfortably meet this requirement?

I suppose I should have started a separate thread. I apologize. I'll start one when I get back from Africa in April.

SG:

Contact Argentina Outfitters.

They can get you a hell of a lot more ducks, no problem. I have shot pigeons as a change in activity. The most I shot in one afternoon was 60 something.

Hey SG, no need to start a new thread. It's all good information.

Larry,

Thanks for the referral. I have ever tried to get in touch with them but no luck on the phone yet. I will try emailing tomorrow. Indeed I have seen your video and it looks like awesome hunting is to be had.

I will let you know if we book up.
