My son came home from college for the holiday and I got him and one my goose hunting buddies to do a thanksgiving hunt.
Had to promise my wife that we'd be back by 10:30 a.m. since turkey was at our house.

any of you who have college aged kids know how hard it can be to schedule a hunt when your kid is home for the weekend.
Add a girl friend to the mix and it is a wonder that I can ever get my kid to go hunting at all

Anyway we had a cold snap in Idaho and thanksgiving morning found us in 10 decree cold.

It was one of those days that keeps you coming back and forgetting all the days you get skunked.

We hunt in a pit blind in a corn field

The cold weather had driven down some northern birds and they were dying to land in our field.

I know that bragging is the surest way to be humbled, but normally I'm a pretty good shot.
That's not saying a lot when you are shooting at decoying birds at 25 yards.

Well, such was not the case. I burned thru a box of shells with nothing to show. I blamed it on a new shot gun that I wasn't used to.

Like any good hunting parnter, my buddies assured me that: "Yes, I think you got a piece of that last bird." "Oh no I'm sure you got that bird."

I got so disgusted that I put down the gun and picked up the camera.

Enjoy

Birds decoying

These landed just out of range

So did these. But it sure helps to have some "live" decoys.

My son (on left) and good hunting buddy with a couple birds. Notice the difference in size of some of the birds

Sorry about your shooting, but what a great hunt.

Nice pics, and good on you for getting your boy out there. As far as missing decoying birds at 25 yards--and a box full at that--something ain't right. I'd pattern that new gun before you get out again.

Thanks for sharing. Only bird I killed on TG was a couple plates of turkey at my folks' place. And what a massacre it was. Wink

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
