Here's a few pics to give you a sample of what RSA has to offer. I may put a group hunt together for next year and split it up with half the trip bird hunting and half the trip taking a few plains game animals. Upland and waterfowl hunting in RSA can be fabulous. Now you're talking! Those cape shelducks are just beautiful. The bill is quite different, but the yellow bills you've got there look quite similar to black ducks we get locally, although the lumage on ours are much darker. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Thanks guys. Yes, RSA has around 16 species of waterfowl, but some are protected. I'm checking into what if any Provinces that allow the most species to be hunted. For sure we can hunt Spurwing and Egyptian Geese, Cape Shelducks, Yellow Bill Ducks, Tree ducks (2), Cape Teal, Hottentot Teal, Shoverler etc. The Cape Shelduck is one of the must have birds for mounting. I think I show the male (grey head) and the female has the white head (if I remember) but don't forget the rock pidgeon, 5 species of Doves and the upland birds (guinea and francolin). They tell me we can hunt Agricultural areas that are fantastic. What I'm thinking is along the lines of 7-10 days. A mix of upland/waterfowl hunting, and then a few days of hunting plains game. Each hunter can pick his own plains game bag, from Eland to Duiker. Time to go would most likely be May or June. That's the optimum time. LRH270, I'll PM you my contact info. We shot birds for 4 or 5 days in South Africa about 3 years ago after our big game hunt. We shot ducks/geese in the morning and doves in the afternoon. Also, francolin/guinea over dogs during the day. Shooting was excellent. By most standards (other than South America) it is high volume. It was a little shocking though. I had never even thought of the possibility of shooting ducks flying into cattle feeders! | |||

Larry, when we were hunting Oribi down on the coast, I saw a feed lot (cattle) that was packed with waterfowl and upland birds. Nearby was a small pond and when we drove by it was black with ducks and geese. I nearly broke my neck rubbernecking. Next year we're going to put a good whacking on them. Keep me posted!!! I shot dove for two days after a plains game hunt and we had ablast!!! Lots of birds and lots of fun!!! When catapults are outlawed, only outlaws will have catapults! | |||

Right now I'm taking names and contact info for those interested in next year. The price goes down for groups: 4 person minimum, 8 person maximum unless a private group of hunters wants the lodge to themselves, then I will need to make different arrangements. Those interested should contact me and I'll keep you posted. Once we have at least 4, I'll contact each of you with full details and costs. This hunt can be birds only, or birds and plains game. For one hunter, you'd be looking at $2,500 for a five day bird hunt (upland & waterfowl combo). This would include daily rates, ground transportation to and from hunting areas, food/drinks (alcohol in moderation), lodging, freezing of trophy birds (Taxidermist will skin and salt for shipment home or mount at your discretion. Shotguns can only be side by side or over & under unless special permit is granted for pump action. Usual season is May/June. For those that want to stay on and hunt plains game; daily rate will be $350 per day plus trophy fees. We will be hunting the bird rich agricultural areas in RSA.
