It looks like I'm going to have a little free time in late Dec and early Jan. Thinking about trying to do a crane hunt in my state of residence, TX. Never shot or hunted cranes before so I'm looking at outfitters. There are quite a few of them that advertise online and I'm getting in touch with them but I'd like to know if any members here have any experience with any particular outfitter that they'd recommend. Any input would be appreciated.

Longneck outfitters out of Lubbock is a safe bet. Scott gas been guiding the area for 20+ years. There's a lot of fly-by-night operations, and there's only a few with that kind of experience. I have my own crane rig, but still hunt with Scott some. If I am working, hunting season is too far away to imagine. If I am getting things ready for hunting season, opening day is perilously close.

You actually eat those things ? Doesn't sound like they'd be fit for the table. Got some here but no season. From what I hear they are great eating. They call them the "rib-eye of the sky."

Same nickname up here...and yes, they are delicious. They are easy to overcook though, so be careful.

I eat 100 breasts or so of them a year! Tender, thick...great flavor. They eat seeds, young grasses and the like, so no fishy/snail taste to them at all. They look like a heron, but totally different behavior and food source. Texas has a long season, and 3 bird limit. If I am working, hunting season is too far away to imagine. If I am getting things ready for hunting season, opening day is perilously close.

For the past 3-4 years I have been crane hunting with Will Granberry-owner of Avian Skies. Outstanding operation. avianskies.com I have them on speed dial and hunt Teal, big ducks and Sandhill cranes with them. Will lives in Edna,Texas and conducts hunts near Edna and Port Lavaca. Contact Will Granberry on his cell-same number listed on website: 361-235-0100 I love crane! Prepare like a similar sized cut of NY Strip or Ribeye. Will knows me by name. I can't recommend his outfit enough. Andy We Band of Bubbas N.R.A Life Member TDR Cummins Power All The Way Certified member of the Whompers Club

I shot them in Alaska and we just cooked them like a small turkey. They are just excellent and right there with rough grouse. Mark MARK H. Sandhill Cranes are excellent game birds and they're not called "ribeye's in the sky" for nothing. Texas is loaded with them but you may have to obtain a free permit, at least you used to. Be sure to check on a HIP number if your hunting migratory birds. It's federal.
