Never measured wingspan, but I'd wager the big ones we shoot locally will be in the mid-teens, pounds wise, and as much as 40" tip to tip. They sure make a nice splash when they cannonball into the drink, though. Smiler

Over the years I have kept records of our "Giant Canada" geese. Males average 13.25 lbs and females at 11.5 lbs. I've heard of guys taking geese weighing 15-16 and even 20 lbs but none panned out when put on an accurate scale. LDK

Just returned from an Alberta goose/duck hunt, we asked the outfitter the questions; what is the biggest goose you've ever personally seen or confirmed shot, weight-wise?? we've all heard about 14# - 18# geese, but he said a local guy offered $$$ for someone who had an honest 17-18# goose, no one brought anything heavier than 14#.... FWIW, an 11# - 12# goose is a big f*&^#r indeed....

In over 50 years of hunting Canadas - boy, it doesn’t seem that long! - I have killed exactly one that weighed in at almost exactly 14#, and this out of many many birds bagged and a lot more that I hae seen taken.
To give you an idea of how big that really is, I grew up in what is now the "Quota Zone" of So. Illinois. I called geese for folks and I hunted a lot, as much as I could skip school and get away with! Every year the local paper in Cairo, IL gave a new Browning shotgun to whomever killed the largest (heaviest) bird. I had the gun won until a few days before the season was over and someone beat me out by a couple of ounces.
My son killed two resident geese here in GA couple of years ago, one weighed 14 and a half, other was almost exactly 16#. Local warden told him he was sure they were from a couple of pairs of giant Canadas bought and brought in by a local some years prior but if they were I never heard of anyone else killing any that big.
And as somebody has remarked, a 12# goose is a BIG bird and anything over 13# is very big and a rare bird. I have often wondered if the weights would creep up as we get more and more resident, non-migrating geese but so far, I have not seen this. Still shooting birds that will average some 9-11# with an occasional big one over 12#.
Ah, the season opens soon and I'll be there if I can find enough water to float the boat.

Lord, give me patience 'cuz if you give me strength I'll need bail money!!

It is interesting that so many things suffer from this thing called "ground shrinkage"....sometimes it is an epidemic. I really like to weigh things, it is very educational. We have the smallest race of canadas here in SW alaska, the cacklers. I have weighed several that are only 3 1/2 lbs. We also have taverners that are about 5 lbs and many 'tweeners that are 4 to 5 lbs.
I have weighed multiple swans...probably 20, and have yet to have one break 20 lbs. The average is 17 to 19 with a few coming real close to 20... I shot a young of the year last year that was 14 lbs. I don't know what the wingspan of these are....probaly in the neighborhood of 6'. They definitely make a big splash when they hit the water or a crater in the ground.

The vancovers down in SE Ak are supposedly about 10-12 lbs but I have not weighed any.

YMMV,

phil

Well spoken - I have often wondered if these folks use the same set of scales as does Roland Martin re "Son! Good fish! That's a really big one! Moose bass - about 7 pounds!" I catch the same fish and it weighs in at a good solid 4 pounds!!!!
Where can we buy a set of those scales???????

That's like the chatter I heard over the radio while commercial salmon trolling.

"Just got one, about 16 lbs."

"That one would be 26 lbs. if it was sport caught".

jumping

Some of the Western Canada geese here get to be around 15 lbs. after a summer of fattening up in the waste treatment ponds. thumb
