I used Hevishot, before they started producing the banded shot. It was all a random shape. It hits hard and has excellent range, but for me the meat damage was just ridiculous.

I found it tended to tear through the flesh like shrapnel rather than strike and enter the bird lke traditional shot does. This may have been eased since they have started producing the uniform shot, but I haven't tried it to be able to commment.

The birds I shot were high driven Mallard, so damage was definately not down to them being too close!!

Killing power though is very impressive, and I would be interested in testing some 3" goose loads this year if I can get any.

I'll keep my Winchester and Kent steel. Non-toxic shot is insanely over priced, that's why they attempt to disguise it in boxes of 10. I can shoot my 300 RUM cheaper than paying $2.70 per shot shell. Modern steel kills just fine for me, and I agree with Fallow Buck: the meat damage is bad. Upon striking bone, Bismuth shot disintegrated into fine bits inside ducks. thumbdown

I also agree that Winchester and Kent Fast steel is plenty adequate. My rich friends that can afford to buy the hevi-shot and similar stuff tell me its just unbelievable how far the stuff will kill. IMO, the fun of duck hunting is working them in close and a load of 1 1//4 oz. in a 2 3/4 inch chamber works fine for me. I have surprised myself and others at how well the Kent steel will reach flaring mallards. Merg

I fed my 10 ga last year with Hevi Shot. It performed well on big geese and snows. However, this year the price of Hevi shot has sky rocketed. Close to $4.00 per round for 10 ga. Which is just crazy. I am going back to steel.

I think if you lead that bird well and the bird is with in range you will at least knock it down with steel. Although some time's with steel, it will take a duck or goose some flight time to figure out that he's been hit.

In my opinion Hevi shot kills better then steel.

What do you intend to hunt with Hevi shot?

maxbear, I shoot Snow's with 3" steel BB's and found that load to be very effective. On our giant Canada's I sometimes use 3.5" BBB's, but over decoys the Fasteel BB load (Kent) does fine. I'm with you on the price of the nontoxic loads; over priced, waaaay over priced. I don't buy their hype anymore than I believed the Fed's telling us thousands of waterfowl were dying of lead poisoning and then had us watch video of birds dying from avian cholera, claiming it was lead. Bogus! Waterfowl do not congregate when they die from lead XXX, they go off and hide in very thick cover and die alone, but not in the great numbers shown in their video's. That comes from short stopping and holding birds on frozen refuge lakes by feeding truck loads of corn. One bird gets sick, and thousand can catch it. Who's doing the killing there? Good hunting this year, David

Mr. Keith, I have been useing steel BBB Winchester Drylocks, and haveing good luck with them. I just came home with 2 cases of them the other day. The gunshop had some new ammo gimmick on the shelves called "black cloud". This ammo is made by Federal. Fortry percent of the pellet's in this "black cloud" ammo are a differant shape.
I bought 4 boxes of it to try out. Not enough to really test, but it's a start. I would of bought more but 4 boxes is all he had. I'll have to pattern it through my 12 ga because they don't make it in 10 ga.

I sure do miss waterfowl hunting with lead shot. But them days are over. I just hate seeing steel pellets go through a goose and the only thing to fall is a few feathers. As I see the honker fly away I say to myself. He's gonna land 300 yard's away over in that field where I don't have permission.

Here's the link to that Federal stuff.

http://www.federalcartridge.com/default.asp?pg=46

It's probley junk too, well see.

Take care and I hope you shoot a banded goose or two this season!!!!!

max, what did the Federal B C set you back? I've seen the commercial but haven't looked for any yet. The "saturn" shaped pellets appear to be prone to sail off in the stratosphere. It will be interesting to see what they do. Since Blount bought Federal (and many others) their ammo has been at the upper end of cost. I use their premium rifle cartridges and although I am very happy with performance, they are more expensive than others. Our Goose season (early) is open until the 15th. Good hunting and watch for those neck bands! David

Mr. Keith

Those Federal blank clouds cost's about 20 dollars for 25 rounds. 12 gauge 3" 1 1/4 oz. BBB. 1450 FPS

Yeh all this ammo is damn expensive. I would hate to be a poor school boy again.

What are you useing for a waterfowl gun? How has the abuse of all these non toxics treated your barrel?

DB Bill,

We handload Hevi Shot in our 10 ga Goose loads.
A bit expensive but really lethal at the longer ranges. We use the pattern Master choke tubes and BB size shot.

I love to use Hevi-shot, but it's just too pricey now, even to reload.

I would use the 2 3/4" shells, with #4 shot for geese, and #6 for ducks, and found no need for the magnum versions.

Now you can be looking at nearl $5 a shot - crazy money at our club, where we will go thru 3 cases a season each!

I really, really like Hevi-Shot. I also hated hitting geese with steel, seeing feathers come off, and having them fly away.

The last couple of years I've bought a lot when it goes on sale at the end of the season. I have some stocked up, but when it runs out I won't pay the current price. I'll probably go back to the 10 gauge, which kills pretty well even with the steel. The hevishot did extend the range, though.

I'm not a big fan of steel for geese, although they work for my friends up close. I use heavishot for geese alone and it's fantastic. I switch to steel for ducks but always carry a few for the odd goose that may come in.

I agree it's expensive, but I bought 40 rounds, I still have 25 more to go and have 11 birds to show for it. I sure wish I had farm fields to hunt though! Some guys have 30 birds or more already on fields.

I found not only is the ammo worth it, but it's the summer of practice at the skeet and clays ranges where it really pays off.

practice, practice, practice

DB Bill aka Bill George,
I have used steel and Hevi-Shot on ducks and geese. The Hevi-Shot has much farther range. I killed a speckled belly goose at 70 yards, a witnessed shot! I missed at 40 yards, my hat came down over my eyes, when I recovered, I was mad, and BOOM, 3-4 seconds later, the bird drops. I have had complete pass throughs with Hevi-Shot at geese at 40 yards. My buddy was shooting steel and his bird shook off the hit and my Hevi-Shot produced the second half of a double DOA, (dead on air). The Hevi has much greater range and penetration and it patterns much tighter than you would think. I used IC choke for waterfowl and it worked just fine. The obvious setback is cost. You can save money using steel, just keep your shots within 30 yards to 40 yards. Go bag a few birds and have fun. Later, the cost is forgotten when you recall a good day in the field.

I shoot Winchester Supremes and Kent almost exclusively, with no problems. Unless you like getting bent over, or have more money than sense, I can't imagine anyone paying for Hevishot on decoying birds. It's just not necessar, IMO.

If you only hunt waterfowl a couple times a year you can forget the cost.

But some of us hunt waterfowl several times a week for a couple months and we would notice the cost of $3+ each shotshells. Sometimes every day when it's storming Big Grin

I used to handload Hevi-Shot when I could buy it for $69 for a 7 lb jar, it's twice that now.

So it's Kent Fast Steel and my own steel shot handloads now.
