We had a fantastic early season Greenwing Teal hunt this past weekend. There were plenty of teal in the area. Teal will come into great plumage in about 3 more weeks. By mid-November most drakes are in very good color.

Love the GREEN in Greenwing Teals.

A drake with partial plumage.

Nice old drake...he would have been in fantastic plumage in about 2 more weeks.

A mature hen greenwing teal....she was fat and bulky.

This was a mucky hunt...for diehard waterfowlers Big Grin

Got a bonus Black Duck.

And this is what it's all about...ducks are just an added bonus Smiler

Nice Oz! I'm well-versed in the muck of what looks like a salt marsh to me (tidal, black duck, etc.). rotflmo

What state?

This is about the most mature GW drake I've shot....with the deeply colored patch at the nape of the neck.

@just-a-hunter
Glad you enjoyed the pics. You are probably killing drakes, most are out of plumage. Drakes will be in good plumage right around Nov 15th. Not sure if that is too late for the little ducks to have moved out of your area and migrated further south.

@Norton
This one in NJ...we keep it hush hush Smiler

That bird in the pic looks to have good plumage. However the vertical white line on the side is what I look for to determine if they are ready for mounting.

Here is a good drake from last week. He had decent colors, but the white vertical line had just started to form.

And here is the vertical white line....if this one is not there or if it is partially formed then in my opinion the bird is not worth mounting and you should be looking at cooking recipes.

Now this bird shown above is our North-American Greenwing Teal....the Eurasian Greenwing Teal lacks this vertical line completely. Instead it has a "horizontal" white scapular line which is used to determine if the bird is ready for mounting or not.

We get females along with hen blue wings in September but drakes here in winter months and in full plumage. They are fine little buzz bombs and always excellent eating. Nice pics collector as always Smiler

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
