I have a 54 caliber lyman's great plains flintlock rifle and shoot a 425 grain hornady great plains conical. I use 1 grain of FFFFG Goex down the barrel and then 100 grains of Hodgson triple 7 FFG. I like the Triple seven because its not corrosive like true black powder. But it needs the FFFFG grain to make sure it ignites. I also use the FFFFG in the pan. I've shot this load since I bought the gun two years ago. But recently I've had someone tell me that you never ever ever put FFFFG down the barrel, even though I read that it was ok to do on a website. What's everyones opinion on this? Am I being stupid? Am I at risk of an accident? Do I need to change this up immediately? Advice needed.

A fella wouldn't want to use 4f for his main charge but I wouldn't worry about using a pinch to help initiate a charge of BP substitute. I am a little surprised it only takes 1 grain to do the trick though. Seems to me since you're using even a little BP in your GPR you'd need to clean it just as quickly and just as thoroughly as if you used real BP for everything. What has your experience been?
