It's been over a decade since I sold my heavily used TC-Renagade 50cal percussion. I had planned at the time to buy either a 50 or 54cal Flintlock, thing was I was moving from NJ to PA... Well otherthings intervened... I'm finally seriously shopping for a flint gun for PA's flint only season and was looking at a Lyman Stalker... Anyone have any comments on these? One of the local stores has a demo54cal on the shelf, I know that there's more stuff available for the 50's, but You gotta love the heavier hitting 54's... Hell I'd buy a 58cal flinter if they made one.... AllanD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! your "welcome to PA" is a bit belated, I've been here for 10 years ![]() I don't need a barrel for a flinter I need a complete rifle. I am not determined to be traditional enough to buy a rifle with a curved brass buttplate though ![]() I am enough of a traditionalist to actually use black powder... Yeah, the hooked buttplate is the least favorite feature of my Lyman Great Plains Rifle flintlock. I have a cousin who has been happy with his Lyman Trade Rifle but uses a caplock. It has a curved rather than hooked buttplate but I must admit the flat rubber pad on the Deerstalker looks much more comfortable than either.

I'm not worried about where to go for a rifle I'm concerned about my choice of rifle. My local gunshop has a Lyman deerstalker 54caliber flintlock, and I basically wanted to know what everyone thinks of the Lyman. When I started shopping for a flintlock about a year ago the powerbelt bullets everyone swears by weren't available (or atleast I couldn't find them) in 54cal, but that ain't the case now, so since I'd rather have something bigger than a .50 anyway... the powerbelts are now leagal in PA's flint season, so I see no reason to buy a specific slow twist patched-roundball rifle. I know a fellow in Wisconsin that has a couple of Lyman ML's. He says they are good shooters but also stress you read and understand the owners manual. ![]() Garden View Apiaries where the view is as sweet as the honey.

I have a Lyman Great Plains Hunter percussion in .50 caliber and for the money I think it's very good rifle. They are available in .54 caliber flintlock, and they have a curved buttplate but that hasn't been a problem for me.

Well, thestore demo I'm looking at is the stalker model with the rubber recoil pad (which I intended to replace with a grind to fit limbsaver). Thing Is I see the Lymans trading from just below $600 to over $700 retail and this one can be mine for under $400 AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! WOW... BTW I typed "retail" and meant MSRP which is usually 25% higher. It never occoured to me to seach gunbroker.com. And Black powder rifles can be shipped ![]() But the only one found that was worty of note was: http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=44785872 and that's a percussion rifle... I suspect the ones you are pointing out are as well. Show me a 54caliber Deerstalker flintlock and I'll get excited ![]() to find "in-stock" let alone cheap.... I specifically NEED a flinter for the rules of the specific season I'm buying the rifle for. and from what I've been able to find an unfired Lyman Deerstalker 54Flint for $350-ish is still a good deal. I bought my Lyman Great Plains 45 cap and ball as a kit from Wal-Mart. I believe the price was about $250.00 at the time a couple of years ago. If you can get an unfired Lyman Deerstalker 54Flint for $350-ish it sounds like a good deal to me. That being said I shoot real well with my Lyman 3" 3shot groups at 100 yards off a bench rest. The only thing that I dont like about the Lyman is the trigger seems to be too heavy a pull. I have had better triggers on the TC Halken and CVA Halken I had, but the Lyman out shoots the others. It is a slow twist for round balls. Good luck and let us know how well your flint lock shoots. Swede --------------------------------------------------------- NRA Life Member
