I saw a pic recently of a hunter who downed a Cape Buffalo with a muzzleloader but no info was given as to the caliber or load. I was under the impression that modern replica blackpowder rifles were unsuitable for anything larger than say Eland. What rifles and loads are these guys using? P.S. I recently sold my Investarm .54 Hawken!

Jim Gefroh and an associate have killed some of the African big stuff including elephant and buffalo using 8 bore flint locks over the past few years.

I have 400 grain 45 cal. heat-treated LBT's for shooting in sabots in my White muzzleloader. They are the WFN's, and perform exactly as a solid. Would not hesitate to shoot a buff or elephant with one. I got approx. 48" of penetration on an elk with a frontal shot, and recovered the bullet in the hip.

I've seen several asiatic water buffalo shot various muzzleloaders and the results have been very unimpressive. The number 1 ml buff was taken with a original Knock and a 690 grain conical bullet and we nearly got killed by that buff after he was shot. The bullet penetrated fully and was found under the skin on the far side, pretty much the same as get with a .416 and 400 A frames, he just didn't go down very fast. I've also seen them shot with various .50 cals and a dozen shots is not abnormal.

If you can find some of the older Black Powder Hunting mag's there are several articles on hunting and taking the big-5, one gentleman has used just about all of the old time bore from 4 on down.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not referring to 2 bores, 4 bores etc. but rather the more common .45 to .72 caliber guns commonly available today.

I have read a lot of the books written by the old timers in Africa and Asia, they often refer to 10 bores as "light" rifles, which were not suitable for "big" game. Of course a leopard isn't big or especially tough. Just remember when you see someone posing with a dead animal, it dosn't really tell the story on how they got that way. I know a number of ph's that would rather guide a bowhunter on dangerous game than a ml hunter, if that tells you anything.

Dort Bigg has taken the Big Five with a .72 cal. muzzleloader, if I remember correctly.

There is a book by Don Kettlecamp on hunting in Africa and Australia with muzzleloaders. He's taken just about everything, and used to write for the now-defunct "Blackpowder Hunting" magazine. I don't think you'd want to hunt any big stuff with less than .58 and a conical, or perhaps .69 and a round ball.

I was with Don Kettlekamp when he killed the #1 Aussie water buff, it was his "Knock" muzzleloader that I referred to above. Don only used original mls and did a lot of studying on it.

Visit Jim Shockey's web site. He's taken many large African animals with his TC. He uses Nosler bullets but I'm not sure of his load. I may see Cory at the NWTF show this coming weekend and I'll ask him.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
