But there is no thing as institutional racism. Especially, there is no institutional racism in the GOP controlled southern legislature.

If one does not like racism being identified, then one should not do racists things.

There’s a sordid tradition of gerrymandering throughout the United States, sometimes racial, sometimes political, etc.

To say that to fight racism, you have to create racist districts is just exacerbating and continuing the problem, it would seem.

In this day and age, how hard would it be to computer generate a state map/grid of districts with equal numbers of voters each, the boundaries as rectangular as possible and regardless of race, wealth, former powerful congressman or woman… and let the chips fall where they may.

Make 20 plans and get Vanna out of retirement to spin the wheel.

Yeah, that's why we have federal courts.

Just looking at the title of this thread, it seems backwards.
The SCOTUS ordered the Alabama legislature to draw a race-based district, didn’t it.

No Judge, if you read the opinion, the S. Ct. ordered AL could not prevent folks representation based on race.

Your title is my reference, not the opinion.

You're focusing on the thread title? When we have the opinion?

Damn!

Just pointing out the irony of the thread title and that using race quotas to fight racism is (at first blush, anyway) paradoxical.

If we're going to be critiquing thread titles, this forum will become rather tedious.

so, in your opinion, titles should be ignored for "tedious" reasons, even though they are the "teaser" for reading a thread?

Critique thread titles as you will, if that's how you get your kicks. I'll keep my boredom to myself from now on.

So they redid the map, and it looks how?

I don't see how the SCOTUS can say specifically how it should be drawn, and if the new one is as gerrymandered as before, they are going to get struck down again.

That the SCOTUS stepped in at all must have meant the original map was pretty egregious.

How did they refuse to draw a non racial district? I didn't see a map of the new proposal in the article? It would also seem to me that a gerrymandered district map that gives 2 black majority districts is likewise a problem, in that it would disenfranchise other groups (if that is truly a constitutional point)... Pick contiguous counties and put them in a district that follows current political boundaries... seems simple.

And yes, I get that the politicians have been doing this for quite some time. In MN they have been doing this to give the Twin Cities metro more control for quite a while... but apparently that's OK because its the Democrats doing it...
