Well, no surprise. As I recall, they tried this in Trump's first term, and I think it's part of project 2025.

President Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's board of directors to "cease federal funding for NPR and PBS," the nation's primary public broadcasters. Trump contends that news coverage by NPR and PBS contains a left-wing bias. The federal funding for NPR and PBS is appropriated by Congress.

The executive order, like many that have been signed by the president, could be challenged in court.

At the hearing in late March, heads of both networks spoke of the mission to provide nonpartisan news and programming to the American public, without charge.

NPR receives about 1% of its funding directly from the federal government, and a slightly greater amount indirectly; its 246 member institutions, operating more than 1,300 stations, receive on average 8% to 10% of their funds from CPB.

By contrast, PBS and its stations receive about 15% of their revenues from CPB's federal funds.

Most of the funds for public media go to local stations; and most to subsidize television, which is more expensive than radio.

The networks say they have been encouraged repeatedly by the agency and Congress to develop private financial support and have worked assiduously for years with the FCC to ensure that content falls within FCC guidelines.

PBS offers a heavy amount of educational fare; NPR relies more on news and music. Both provide locally grounded content and reach more than 99% of the population, at no cost. And in many states and communities, the stations serve as a key component of emergency and disaster response systems.

President Trump opened up a new front in his assault on public media on Monday, asserting that he was removing three of the five board members of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The corporation sued Trump on Tuesday morning in response, pointing to federal law and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to contend that he does not have the power to take these actions.

Last month, the White House said it was going to send a request to Congress for a rescission of funding for NPR and PBS.

Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission has launched an investigation of NPR and PBS, saying it appears that their corporate underwriting spots violate laws banning commercial advertisements.

How much do you pay to listen to local radio broadcasts?

Nothing.

That NPR costs nothing is not a benefit to the listener as compared to commercial radio. Interestingly, there certainly are ads on NPR stations.

Admittedly they often play things like classical music which doesn’t generate enough audience to get enough advertising revenue per usual time slot to make it doable commercially.

But IMO, the public should not be in the business of providing folk’s entertainment regardless of how culturally desirable that entertainment might be.

Last time I drove out to Montana, there was never a time I could not find at least a half dozen radio stations. Sure one was always a NPR affiliate but that kind of indicates there is no lack in the private market for radio availability.

NPR themselves down played the importance of govt funding and how it was a minor source of their income

If it falls on its face, you have no right to claim “I told you so” as you have continually been going on about how it’s the end of the republic.

Of course, when he runs for a third term and starts using the military to suppress voting, you will be fully justified in claiming “I told you so” and frankly, I will say then that you were right.

As to your first sentence - We know what his goals are. We don't yet know if the system can resist. "I told you so" has to do with the contest rather than win or lose. In that regard I could say "I told you so" now.

Re your second sentence - He's already expressed those ideas and pondering the opportunity.

BTW, it's good to know some idea of the threshold crossed where you will get your head out of denial.

Sadly, neither source is non-partisan nor unbiased. I can't disagree with Trumps contention that there news reporting is left-leaning. However, even if the reporting were not left leaning, if it is truthful it is bound to be anti-Trump quite often. This is the world we lived in. Media outlets are biased, regardless of where their funding comes from. Regards, Bill.

Texas just approved and additional $7.7 billion for PUBLIC schools, and $1b for school vouchers to allow parents to choose the school for their kids... no requirement for them to be parochial, as these vouchers can be used in other districts. I keep trying to learn you that Texas school districts are INDEPENDENT (it's literally in the name of nearl every district) and deciding to take your kids from Houston ISD to, say, Clear Creek ISD was actually illegal. Even if the parent worked in the opposite district.

Texas legislature, people, and governor have spoken. You usually like it when it's all legal and approved by the government.

Ignore the 1A or ignore the separation of church and State? Since when did using tax dollars to fund religious schools count as free speech?

I guess it does in BFE Texas....

When the. Ct., accepts it, then it will be legal. I also believe the S. Ct., will.

A majority has in a more limited context that state funds used for non-provincial schools have to be applied to all other private and religious schools.

Now, none of that changes the fact our most ardent, fake, conservatives scream about state economic control while wanting to see the hand of government applied to providing economic advantage to a private entity offering a service. That is not very free market, conservatism. Of course, these same, fake, conservatives come here and preach Marxist theory of Labor Value. Well, Marx did not come up with it. Marx applied it to class struggle to rationalize and justify class warfare.

This action is most likely constitutional. This action just is not very conservative.

Letting parents decide which school their kids go to isn’t conservative?

Public funding of education is something that has been decided. The question is, how do you put some market force and fiscal restraint in the system?

A school voucher isn’t the government establishing a religious school. It’s a parent choosing where their kids go, and the public money is following the kid.

I do support public education… but not necessarily the system and the decisions it has made.

I know some teachers who are the most dedicated and altruistic public servants it has been my pleasure to meet. I’ve also met some who are a waste of oxygen. Unfortunately the Peter principle is alive and well in public education bureaucracy.

You're not tryin to tell us that parents will be using vouchers to send their children from one public school to another public school, are you? Not allowed under the new law.

And, btw, about 70% of private shools in Texas are parochial.

The money should have been used to upgrade the public school system and increase public school treacher's salaries.

They want the right to segregate and indoctrinate with public money.
