Curious about commercial flights from China to the USA on Chinese airlines.
Have no idea where they touch down in the USA but I think it would be a good practice to have them go no further than coastal cities. All passengers would have to transfer to a domestic airline if going further into the country.
They could gather intelligence not unlike a balloon.
Curious if there are no fly zones over the ground based missile silos?

Good idea. Not like they have sophisticated spy satellites and surveillance aircraft. If we get rid of balloons and civilian aircraft overflights that will teach 'em a lesson.

Smithfield Foods Inc., one of the biggest pork producers in the United States, on Wednesday agreed to be bought by Shuanghui International Holdings Ltd., the majority shareholder in China’s largest meat processor, for about $4.72 billion.

The deal, which still faces a federal regulatory review and Smithfield shareholder approval, is the largest takeover of a U.S. company by a Chinese firm. It’s the latest in a string of such deals made recently by Chinese companies.

But the acquisition is likely to face hefty U.S. scrutiny. It comes at a time when China has had serious food safety concerns, some of which have included Smithfield’s suitor, Shuanghui.

Risks to the U.S. food supply “enters everybody’s mind,” said Paul Mariani, director at Variant Capital Advisors in Chicago, who previously worked at a food and agribusiness boutique investment bank. But he said he believes Smithfield will continue to operate as normal.

Smithfield said the deal isn’t about importing Chinese pork into the U.S. Instead, the company says it’s a chance to export into new markets with its brands, such as Smithfield, Armour and Farmland.

Smithfield CEO Larry Pope said in a conference call on Wednesday that the transaction “preserves the same old Smithfield, only with more opportunities and new markets and new frontiers.”

“People have this belief ... that everything in America is made in China,” he said. “Open your refrigerator door, look inside. Nothing in there is made in China because American agriculture is the most competitive and efficient in the world.”

Indeed, the acquisition highlights what could be growing interest in American food by Chinese consumers. Foreign food, such as milk powder from New Zealand and vegetables from neighboring Asian countries, is prized by Chinese consumers because of the frequent domestic food safety scandals in their country.

Among the most notorious, six babies died and 300,000 were sickened in 2008 from drinking infant formula and other dairy tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. And Shuanghui’s reputation was battered in 2011 when state broadcaster CCTV revealed its pork contained clenbuterol — a banned chemical that makes pork leaner but can be harmful to humans.

Derek Scissors, an expert on China’s economy the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based conservative think tank, said companies like Shuanghui are “not looking to cause any trouble in the American market at all” or “cut corners.”

“Quite the opposite ... They want to gain from what the U.S. is able to do,” he said. “But whether they can operate an American company in the U.S. market remains to be determined.”

Oh this was in 2020.

Biden sold us out...oh wait, the former guy was President.

Once again, you are a lying POS. Smithfield was sold to the Chinese in 2013 under Obama's watch and permission.

Why don't you do a little research before spewing your lies. Oh wait, it doesn't fit your lying narrative.

I agree with the "why" when you would think a country with advanced technology would revert to something simple?

The official told Fox News that "this information was discovered after the [Trump] administration left."

I don't see how a Chinese balloon in American airspace is anything other than target practice.

Me? I'd of strongly preferred to make it a "hold my beer and watch this!" moment.

The fighter pilot can shoot the balloon down but with the canopy on the plane open.

The fighter pilot has to use their sidearm out the open canopy, no missiles.

Use a missile, but no gps or computer tracking, you gotta aim.

Fine, guns on the plane, but you gotta close your eyes, ( no peeking!) 30 seconds before you pull the trigger.

We're all upper lip sweaty about a Chinese balloon? cuckoo

I think the House intel needs to look into what the DOD is doing.
If they knew spy balloons have been here before, and did not notify the secretary of defense, Why?
Biden said he wanted this balloon shot down, the pentagon said wait.
This is the pentagon that over ruled officers on the ground in Afghanistan, and told Biden to continue with the withdraw. We know what a cluster fuck that was.
There is something wrong with the current staff at DOD. There must be a balance somewhere between being a hawk and a chicken.

Open borders have been a problem for years now. It is a complex problem that doesn’t lend itself well to your simple minded approaches like building a wall.

Chinese spying? Duh? We have doing it for years. They have doing it for years.

Chess game maybe (or GO?). Have we broken and decoded their second-best encryption scheme using the data from the balloon?

So the military is saying they now know of multiple attempts, some of which were during the Trump years- and didn’t report them…

Not sure if this is they figured it out after the fact, or if the military leadership decided to take control (that pesky civilian control thing) or even they decided Trump would be able to rally election votes over something… who knows.

Then they tell Biden and he demands a shoot down, and they wait until it’s past the land mass to shoot it down…

I assume there was some national security reason Biden wanted it shot down, since you lib types keep telling us how he’s a good guy and not a crazy like Trump.

So either Biden is a loose screw or the military knows these balloons are not spy equipment.

Somehow I can’t see a large item like a balloon with that much payload isn’t detectable by our radar systems (if not they are a huge civil aviation danger…) and either they are ok under international law (I think if folks are open about them they are ok) or we should be splashing them before they arrive on our coasts.

What happened here in total makes our national command authority look like a bunch of incompetents.

Technically, the President Issued a Standing Order to shoot down the ballon leaving it to military command to decide when it was safe to so shoot.

What I have heard is the Standing Order was made after President directed the ballon to be shot down, but military command ;which answers to the President) advocated letting the balloon get into a safer, more salvageable location. The President agreed. Hence, the President issued the written Standing Order.

That seems reasonable to me. It appears how command structure should work.

Of course, the President could have overruled this counsel and issued an order to shoot it down now.

My concern is that it appears, our civil government (at least) did not know this balloon was here until it got to Montana.

I am going to assume the military knew this object existed once it hit US Territory. They may not have known what it was. It is fair to assume the military did not know this balloon was here until Wednesday.

Either way, the issue going forward is what needs to be done to detect and defeat these low(er) tech methods of spying that violates our territorial sovereignty.

I have no reason to believe this was not for espionage. The physical wreck snd salvage will answer that assumption as fact. Of course, regardless of what the Government says about what is salvaged some will refuse to accept.

Do we know President Trump was not briefed about balloons during his term. The one person I will not believe is President Trump.

Dr. Easter has stated President Trump’s former Sec. of Defense says there were no balloons. Based on the reporting, that makes me think the Administration either 1) did not read their briefs, 2) or was not informed by the military, or 3) the Administration was properly informed and did not take it seriously.

You can decide which of those two options to believe. I am unsure. There is always a fourth option being during President Trump’s administration there were no balloons. I do not believe that one.

I really do not care. I want to look forward to better, earlier detection and response.

Now, if Duggaboy is correct that military high command withheld from the Office of the President Chinese Ballon’s had entered our territory, then those people should be removed.

Several top Trump officials have stated on camera they were never notified of these incidents. I think that is concerning. Why would the military want to keep such things secret? Is that what they are supposed to do?

It also does look like they knew about the current balloon event long before it crossed Alaska.

It should have been downed as soon as it entered western US space. Something is not right, something is wrong, none of this situation and how it was handled makes sense. That includes supposed previous incidents.

Since I have little respect for govt functions I post these memes in closing:
