Watching the video, I see that most of the "experts" quoted in the many articles I read about taking it down were, of course, completely wrong.

Looked pretty easy to me, also, where is this vast debris field raining down to Earth?

If the projectile hit the balloon and not the payload there likely would not be a debris field. I expect they were anticipating decent odds of a poor hit. Still they must have watched how it came down.

There were many opportunities to take it down in vast areas of barren land where nobody was in danger especially in Montana and east for several states.
Just makes me wonder if the we afraid it contained biological weapons of some sort. Just seems really fishy to me that they let the Chinese blatantly let it move across our skies for several days.

I know this does not fit well into the narrative the Conservative press has been spinning, but it did happen.

Report: Biden Administration Tried to Hide Chinese Spy Balloon from American Public

quote:
Bloomberg News reported that the Biden administration was “well aware” that the balloon had entered U.S. airspace on Saturday, January 28, but decided to keep quiet about it so as not to ruin a planned trip by Secretary of State Antony Blinken to China.

The outlet reported:

As it turns out, US authorities were well aware of the unidentified object that had entered American airspace on Jan. 28, that had then left and re-entered over North Idaho on Tuesday. But with such a high-profile trip at stake, keeping it on the down-low was key.

However, on Wednesday, February 1, a Billings, Montana, resident spotted the balloon around 5:30 p.m. local time, and the next day, a local Montana paper published a report about it. Later that day, late Thursday afternoon, the Pentagon finally confirmed the existence of the balloon.

That article claims that it happened during the Trump administration but the linked report doesn't say that.
It just says "Instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years."

Problem is, there is nobody so far in the intelligence community to corroborate it except some anonymous Pentagon official.

Here ya go, Pymple:

Former Trump White House national security adviser John Bolton told Fox News Digital that he never heard of anything like this under his tenure.

"I don’t know of any balloon flights by any power over the United States during my tenure, and I’d never heard of any of that occurring before I joined in 2018," Bolton said. "I haven’t heard of anything that occurred after I left either."

Bolton said that if the Biden administration has "specific examples, they need to tell Congress."

He added: "I can say with 100% certainty not during my tenure."

Robert O’Brien, who served as White House national security adviser from 2019 to 2021, told Fox News Digital that he had no knowledge of anything like this occurring.

"Unequivocally, I have never been briefed on the issue," O’Brien said, telling Fox News Digital that his team, which included Matt Pottinger, who served as deputy national security adviser, and Allison Hooker, who served as senior adviser to Asia, also were not briefed on these activities.

How about this:

quote:
Smithfield Foods Inc., one of the biggest pork producers in the United States, on Wednesday agreed to be bought by Shuanghui International Holdings Ltd., the majority shareholder in China’s largest meat processor, for about $4.72 billion.

The deal, which still faces a federal regulatory review and Smithfield shareholder approval, is the largest takeover of a U.S. company by a Chinese firm. It’s the latest in a string of such deals made recently by Chinese companies.

But the acquisition is likely to face hefty U.S. scrutiny. It comes at a time when China has had serious food safety concerns, some of which have included Smithfield’s suitor, Shuanghui.

Risks to the U.S. food supply “enters everybody’s mind,” said Paul Mariani, director at Variant Capital Advisors in Chicago, who previously worked at a food and agribusiness boutique investment bank. But he said he believes Smithfield will continue to operate as normal.

Smithfield said the deal isn’t about importing Chinese pork into the U.S. Instead, the company says it’s a chance to export into new markets with its brands, such as Smithfield, Armour and Farmland.

Smithfield CEO Larry Pope said in a conference call on Wednesday that the transaction “preserves the same old Smithfield, only with more opportunities and new markets and new frontiers.”

“People have this belief ... that everything in America is made in China,” he said. “Open your refrigerator door, look inside. Nothing in there is made in China because American agriculture is the most competitive and efficient in the world.”

Indeed, the acquisition highlights what could be growing interest in American food by Chinese consumers. Foreign food, such as milk powder from New Zealand and vegetables from neighboring Asian countries, is prized by Chinese consumers because of the frequent domestic food safety scandals in their country.

Among the most notorious, six babies died and 300,000 were sickened in 2008 from drinking infant formula and other dairy tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. And Shuanghui’s reputation was battered in 2011 when state broadcaster CCTV revealed its pork contained clenbuterol — a banned chemical that makes pork leaner but can be harmful to humans.

Derek Scissors, an expert on China’s economy the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based conservative think tank, said companies like Shuanghui are “not looking to cause any trouble in the American market at all” or “cut corners.”

“Quite the opposite ... They want to gain from what the U.S. is able to do,” he said. “But whether they can operate an American company in the U.S. market remains to be determined.”

Oh this was in 2020.

Biden sold us out...oh wait, the former guy was President.

I don't see that a simple statement of fact is doubling down.
Methinks that the outlets running this claim will be the ones with egg on their face.

I have no doubt that China has done this in the past and very likely approached or even entered US airspace, but this incident is something that has never happened before and has exposed a huge fault in our defense, that's all.

I think you are referring to the P-8 incident.
The base aircraft was nothing that special, the electronics and specifically the software used for by the instruments to gather and analyze were highly classified.
The company I worked for supplied some of the spectrum analyzers (which were pretty close to COTS units) used on the aircraft, with specific contract clause that all memory devices must be removable without disassembly of the units. So as the P-8 slowly moved towards the Chinese base, the crew was removing the "hard drives" from the instruments, crushing them before dropping them into deep waters of the South China seas using the special chutes built into the aircraft.
In essence all the China got out of the incident was computers without software.
