Sickening. That it happened at all, and that it happened in Texas. So much for the myth of the rough, tough Texas lawman.

"A born Texan has instilled in his system a mind-set of no retreat or no surrender. I wish everyone the world over had the dominating spirit that motivates Texans.– Billy Clayton, Speaker of the Texas House" I guess we can add to that stale platitude, "and no attack".

I rarely pass on an opportunity to piss on Texas but there were probably 50 cops there who would have gone in if they had just had something resembling leadership available.

That "Chief" should be hung by his balls with barbed wire.

And the worst thing that ever happened to American policing was when this mantra about their most important job is to go home at night took hold.

Your most important job is to do your goddamned job; going home depends on your skill, judgement and luck of the draw.

It seems to me this is indirectly more the militarization of our police.

The top down, command required methodology with politicians at the top more worried about appearance than outcome.

The leadership in Uvalde failed. That they stood around knowing what was going on because they were so trained to follow orders instead of think independently and act.

The culture in that department is what is wrong, and leadership (both the supervisors and the politicians) set the culture.

. . . wrong. A jury of his peers sent him to jail after hearing weeks of live testimony and deliberating for many hours to arrive at a verdict. You’re the one subverting the justice system suggesting that you know better what the outcome of the trial should have been after hearing no evidence, listening to no witnesses, judging the credibility of the witnesses, etc. You rarely pass up an opportunity to embarrass yourself these days it seems.

Not embarrassed at all. Derek Chauvin did his job and political correctness sent him to jail.

I bet he wouldn’t have sat outside while kids were being systematically executed either.

Big Grin

I lived and worked in Alaska for over 25 years. I mostly loved it and fit right in. That's where I met a bunch of Texans who came up every summer for fishing. I had a place in a fishing village in SE AK, so it was a natural. Good people. The thing I learned early on was to avoid topics on politics and religion. Otherwise, we got along just fine. They just called me their liberal friend.

We are still good friends. I plan to do a trip to Texas soon for some hog hunting and just hanging out with them.

I could live in Texas, but I don't want to.

Alaska is too expensive to live there in retirement, so I moved to rural Georgia, back to where I grew up. It's a good home base as long as I can travel, fish, hunt, etc.

Weird - I consider myself far too liberal to be in rural Georgia - or TN, AL, or MS. I had a "construction" company, back in the 80s - working out of Columbus, MS, generally working the old mid-south - sold the business off and went back to college - I liked air conditioning more than painting and sandblasting, and walking metal roofs in july -- that work would likely kill me just to be on-site today. But, heck, it paid the pills and for flight training. Why Columbus, some might ask? My Dad was friends with the plant manager at Mitchell/CECO and I applied all "specialty coatings" and had first crack at leaky/rusty roofs, before replacement. I was young, tough, and tenacious... thought I could paint or fix anything

That has to be the darndest post I have seen in a while. Smiler

In my experience, being "liberal" has practically nothing to do with it.

All it takes is to watch your back and your mouth. I think they call it situation awareness, and carry (except Canada). Don't look vulnerable. That's not unlike anywhere I have been, and I've been to a lot of places, outside the country, all across the world and the USA, 75% of the states, and western Canada.

I spout off herein, but believe me, I know the difference between cyberspace and the real world. This is a safe place where I can say stuff I wouldn't say elsewhere.

ME,
You could put Lane, MM, Jines, and likely LDO in a a dive bar... we'd play pool, buy each other beers, smoke cigars, and be gentlemanly about it - Throw in Doc Butler and Dugaboy, and we'd go find some taqueria to eat at, enjoy each other's company, and have a fine night of it -- and be right back at each other here on the ARPF the next afternoon.. Having been in the deep, old south, nah, man, I am good

As far as I have been -- well, 36 countries, 48 states, DC, and PR -- the roughest/personal fear was in Brazil, the Best - Hard to tell between Japan, S Korea, and Singapore. I've never felt, outside of the old south, who I was friends/friendly with meant i could disappear -- okay, maybe Argentina, but it's different.

Yea, I know what you mean.

I used to think of central and western Canada as ultra safe. But that perception changed, suddenly. Moderately long story. One still must be situation aware no matter where when traveling.

I've been to BC, Yukon, Alberta, Saskatchewan, several times. I want to explore NWT next time. In my experience Canadians are 99% very decent people. But there's the 1%. I can't say the same for the USA.

I used to enjoy boondocking, when traveling and camping. I took joy in finding free camping spots. Not anymore. I now stay in state parks, Provencial parks, maybe city or county campgrounds - generally places with other campers around, and regular patrols of rangers or local LEO. Nowadays, IMO, boondocking is an invitation.

Brazil was pretty hard core - I had to go several times for work - the company provided an armed driver and LOTS of additional insurance. My best friend in the world also had to go for work, -- they had an armed detail escorting them everywhere. all that being said, this is a GREAT hotel, https://www.vitoriahoteis.com.br in Campinas -

Interesting. I'll never go south of the border again, anywhere, especially Brazil.

I spent a week in San Fransico once. The hotel was great. They locked the entrance doors at 11:00 pm with an armed guard at the entrance and exit. All night, the street noises and wailing were like one would imagine in a Syfy movie.

I'll never go back.

Other unsafe places I've been are Ocho Rios Jamaca, Subic Bay Philippines, San Juan Puerto Rico, Cancun Mexico, Panama City, Panama, and several other places I've forgotten about. But a sailors POV is different than that of a tourist.
