A former staffer to President Donald Trump Monday claimed that Peter Navarro—the man behind the tariff rollout—was intentionally left out of White House meetings because of his incompetence.

“What I’m stunned by, I worked with Peter Navarro. I liked Peter Navarro,” said Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as Trump’s director of strategic communications and assistant in 2020. “But Peter Navarro was actively kept out of key economic meetings in the Oval Office by people like Steve Mnuchin, Larry Kudlow, and members of the NEC, because he often didn’t have all the facts and all the details, and gave half-baked ideas to President Trump.”

Griffin’s description of the aide on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″ came just before Trump’s billionaire adviser Elon Musk called Navarro “dumber than a sack of bricks, ”a “moron,” and suggested he be called by the slur “Peter Retarddo.”

Navarro, who led the charge on Trump’s tariff plan, has promised the American public that the country will not sink into recession despite the fact that markets plunged early this week and only slightly bounced back Tuesday.

Navarro tried to assure the public during a Monday interview on on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle.”

He said the market is “finding a bottom now, but it … look, here’s the thing … it’s going to shift over, and it’s going to be companies in the S&P 500 who are the first to produce here. Those are the ones are going to lead the recovery.”

Griffin slammed the mixed signals coming out of the White House, saying “they do have a messaging problem. Everyone’s saying different things about the end game.”

Trump defends the policy, which was calculated based on an economist who has publicly rebuked the math and claimed that it is “very wrong.”

“We’re going to get fair deals and good deals with everybody,” Trump said Monday. “And if we don’t, we’re going to have nothing to do with them. They’re not going to be allowed to participate in the United States.”

Griffin referenced Navarro’s Monday Financial Times op-ed, titled “Donald Trump’s tariffs will fix a broken system.” While his essay claimed there’s “no concessions” or “deal to be made,” said Griffin, “you have others saying we’re open to negotiations.”

“But messaging is secondary to the policy issue here,” she added. “These tariffs are devastating. And every traditional economist, every Republican economist, for decades would have said that this is something that would hurt wealth in this country, that would have the impact it did on the markets.”

The tariff fallout has divided even the most devoted MAGA members, including conservative podcaster Ben Shapiro, who called the agenda “pretty crazy” and “probably unconstitutional.” Several major bankers and financial leaders, including BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, have also denounced the policy, which he said was “destabilizing the economy.”

Even DOGE leader Musk seems to distrust Navarro and has recently questioned his credentials and even broken rank with the president to stand in opposition to tariffs.

The White House declined to comment on Griffin’s statements but pointed the Daily Beast to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s recent response to Musk’s criticism: “Whatever. We are the most transparent administration in history, expressing our disagreements in public."

Yesterday I had a 'discussion' again with my far-right cousin.

I bought him lunch, so he didn't get too heated up.

During the conversation he accused me of cognitive bias or confirmation bias, without using the exact phrase. He claimed that I hated Trump so much that I just looked for affirmations and deny truth. (I'm paraphrasing)

I'm used to that sort of claim, thanks to this forum. I said Trump lies continuously. He asked me to state one of his lies. I mentioned the events on, before, and after 1/6/21 as examples, and specifically the justifications for the pardons of those convicted.

Bottom line is he thinks everything Trump said and did about that was based in truth.

I didn't pursue the issue further. No need, but I shall return to it later better prepared. I just assumed that all reasonable people knew Trump lies and spins.

To me it's just like knowing someone personally who is a compulsive liar, as a matter of fact. Consequently, the assumption is that everything he says is a lie. It's easier that way than bothering to sort it out. I don't consider that cognitive or confirmation bias. It's coincidental that such person keeps on lying constantly, serving as affirmation.

Most people have redeeming qualities to appreciate. I can't think of any regarding Trump. My far-right cousin is a good mechanic, for example.

Several news media reports about the event did not mention or comment on that answer,[588][589][590] including The New York Times.[591]

That kind of characterization (or lack thereof), plus previous occasions in which the media interpreted Trump's answers instead of transcribing (and fact-checking) them, has been denounced as "sanewashing."[592]

The analysis found that the complexity of Trump's speeches remained relatively steady in recent years, at a fourth-grade level (equivalent to a nine- or ten-year-old child). (Note: IMO, except for those with teleprompt and written by Wormtongue Miller)

The article presents testimonies of former collaborators and acquaintances, plus comparisons of his present addresses with recordings from years earlier, "clearer and more comprehensible than now, and balanced with flashes of humor."

The article notes that the Trump campaign has refused to release his medical records, and ends with a quote of his from a rally: "Trump is never wrong. I am never, ever wrong." [594][595]

On October 15, The Washington Post noted that recent polls showed that Trump's age and mental acuity were of increasing concern for voters, though it is not clear whether the same applies to swing voters.[596]

After the election, mainstream media continued to be criticized and accused of sanewashing Trump's most controversial statements.[597]

So, in large part, my point is that Trump will never "Swallow His Words" or deeds. Instead, he will do what he's already demonstrated - lash out and blame shift. and most importantly a large segment of his supporters will believe him. The closer he gets in reality to "loser", the more unhinged he will get, and dangerous.

While multiple critics of Donald Trump have characterized his decision to put his sweeping tariffs on pause for 90 days as "blinking" due to pressure from the billionaires who backed his 2024 presidential bid, a columnist for Salon suggested the turnabout goes deeper than that.

In a column published Thursday morning, longtime political observer Amanda Marcotte made the case that Trump's proclamation on Truth Social that he had a change of heart gave off a cult leader vibe that elicited a similar cultish response from his fans who praised it as a genius move.

As Marcotte wrote, "We're getting a compelling illustration on the national stage of how a cult leader can induce his followers to stick by him, even as he loses his mind and his behavior becomes too erratic and dangerous to defend. Almost every Republican on Capitol Hill knows that Donald Trump's tariff plan is political suicide, but few are willing to admit that Dear Leader fully intends to see this idiocy to the very end."

Calling Trump's move a "victory" among his true believers, she noted it will likely be "short-lived" because of his underlying problems.

"Trump has a messiah complex, which has only grown since that missed assassin's bullet from July was hyped by his followers into 'proof' that he's the Chosen One," she wrote before suggesting, "Even as he blinks momentarily on his tariff mania, his behavior is getting even more erratic in a way that's got 'last days of Waco' vibes from a president who has already unsubtly compared himself to David Koresh. His Truth Social meltdown when announcing the 'pause' indicates a decline in Trump's already-fragile mental state."

To make her case she noted some telling ways in which the president tried to explain away his about-face just days after posting on Truth Social he has no intention of backing down from his policies.

Conceptually, Trump has come up with goals which are not stupid. However, the reality is that he has no idea on how they might be achieved. Improve government efficiency and reduce waste? Great idea but implementation which is beyond stupid. Improve trade imbalance? Again, not totally stupid, but no clue as to how to accomplish it. Reducing the debt? The truth is, he not only doesn't care about debt; he embraces it.
I find Trump to be a detestable human being (while admitting that I don't know him personally) but could forgive that if I thought he really stood for anything other than himself. My understandings are limited. But as I understand it, The US has been able to do persuasive sanctions on other countries that hurt, such as Iran and Russia etc. because of the dollar and economic dominance and allies.

China and Russia for example would like to change all that.

Trump is facilitating the decline of US exceptionalism in several ways. It's the opposite of Make America Great Again.
