The British had a treaty to defend Poland’s borders. Hitler wasn’t alone in invading or massacring Poles.
Stalin did both with impunity, dividing Poland in accordance with a treaty with the Nazis. The British did nothing to stop Stalin. Then came Operation Barbarossa. By that time, Stalin (like Hitler) had murdered millions of his own citizens in slave labor camps by intentional starvation, purges and racial and religious ethic cleansing. Pretty Nazi-like, one might think.

To fight Hitler, the West gave Stalin a pass on his atrocities. Then, it gave him Eastern Europe to enslave.

Who are we to judge an anmazingly dumb annd insensitive act by the Canadians? Are we any less stupid?

Nope!

Bernie Sanders, a defender of the Soviet Union would have defeated Hillary in a fair primary system. BLM was run by avowed Marxist-Leninists. 80% of college students espouse Socialism but don’t know that “Nazi” was short for or that the Russia was the primary state of the Socialist Republics.

Maybe the cancel culture needs to address any references to FDR. He called Stalin “Uncle Joe”. Kinda ironic we have an “Uncle Joe” as president in our march to socialism.

A lot of rocks need to be thrown, but we need to get out of our glass house first.

Simpleton analysis. The Russians defeated the Nazi's, not us. We needed them. Take a look sometime at how many German divisions were operating on the Eastern Front versus how many were on the Western Front when we invaded Normandy. The Germans would have kicked us back into the English Channel if the Russians hadn't been monopolizing the bulk of the German army.

The idea that the US, the British or anybody else could have done anything to stop the Russian war machine or dictate policy to the Russians at the end of WW2 is a fantasy. Shit, they took almost 400,000 casualties in the two week battle for Berlin. Over 80,000 dead. That's pretty close to 25% of US dead for the whole war.

Did you miss: To fight Hitler, the West gave Stalin a pass on his atrocities.
At the end of WWII, the US was the only nuclear power. Im glad it wasn’t used, but for several years, the US could dictate about whatever it wanted with a single B-29 over Moscow.

Simplistic is equating dead Russians with Germany’s ability to resist American and British troops or Russia’s ability to do the same.

To be honest, the Nazis were more effective at fighting the war than any of the Allies.

If the war had been Germany/USSR alone, the Germans might well have won, or at least fought the Soviets to a political settlement.

The western alliance would never have accepted the level of casualties necessary to beat the Nazis, even though the British Empire and the U.S. had enough numbers and the industrial base to do it. Roosevelt and Churchill would have been replaced if we had taken a million casualties just to invade France.

Neither side would have beaten Hitler alone.

As to the use of a nuke on Germany- sure, we had them, and they were an awesome weapon- but very limited in numbers. Use one and get persistent nerve gas warheaded V2’s all over England (and probably some sort of suicide mission use against the US East coast?) would have likewise been a stalemate. Its main value against Japan was empowering the moderates to accept surrender, not actually weakening them militarily enough to make the invasion easy.

I agree partially. Different purpose as used on Japan than proposed on USSR . Former was a demonstration without much military merit. The latter, against Moscow would be assured destruction of political leadership and command and control ability. A dead autocrat changes everything.

The Soviets fought a different kind of war than the West did. Swarming meat grinder casualties to overload the enemies ability to keep up is not how the US was going to get it done. We wouldn't have come anywhere near Russian casualty numbers. Not even close.

Yes, red army tactics were quite different, but even given that the number of casualties it would have taken us to beat the Nazis without the Soviets being involved would have been orders of magnitude higher than what we had. That still would have been unacceptable to the populace.

Heck, we had issues as it was with our rationing system being unpopular and political unrest related to that- and our home front had nothing compared to any of the other combatants. Look how the UK booted Churchill late in the war.
