Tariffs are paid by Americans, in dollars. They are taxes. There is a reason why he does not want tariffs as a line item on our invoices. When he speaks of billions of dollars rolling in, remember that they are dollars, not yuan nor pesos nor bitcoin.

The inflation percentage may or may not be down, but prices are not. Gasoline is pushing $5 a gallon here, hamburger is $6 a pound, and stodgy DuPont stock is 36 times earnings.

If we're wondering where inflation went, the price of a retirement earnings stream from DuPont dividends should give us a hint...

I do not know whether high interest rates in the early days of the Reagan presidency caused a decrease in inflation. Accepted wisdom says it did, I idly wonder about this, having lived through it with a 19 percent loan on a used pickup truck. It did take money out of circulation and back into the banks. Powell may have reason to believe that higher rates will ease inflation despite causing higher expenses for debt service and ultimately, taxes. Greenspan's quarter-point increases over a longer period of time were bothersome, Powell's shock treatment is no better.

It means that the price of one share of stock is 36 times the per-share earnings.
Divide the company earnings by the number of shares to get this number.
Means you pay $36 for stock that earns $1 that year.

The amount of those earnings paid to shareholders is variable, but the expectation is that those earnings would be divided between shareholder dividends and increases in the company's worth.
