BREAKING: Americans react with horror and revulsion as Donald Trump begins DEMOLISHING the East Wing of the White House to build his tacky $250 million ballroom despite promising that it wouldn't "interfere" with the existing structure.

The People's House is mutating into Mar-a-Lago...

"This is insane. If Obama did this the GOP would impeach," former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger wrote on X in response to a picture of the carnage.

According to the Washington Post, the demolition crews got to work today utilizing a backhoe to destroy a "portion" of the East Wing. One source who "witnessed the activity" stated that they saw Secret Service agents observing the endeavor from the steps of the Treasury Department.

“It won’t interfere with the current building. It won’t be. It’ll be near it but not touching it — and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of,” Trump previously claimed. “It’s my favorite. It’s my favorite place. I love it.”

If finished as planned, t he new 90,000-square-foot building would "nearly double the footprint of the main building and its East and West wings." Trump's goal is to either leave a lasting imprint that will remind Americans for all time of his failed presidency, or he's making himself more at home because he never plans on leaving. His supposed "jokes" about a third term take on a far more sinister cast in this context.

Last week, Trump claimed that the ballroom is being funded by "donations" of up to $25 million from companies like Apple, Amazon, and Lockheed Martin. If true, this points to another huge problem with this project: it's blatant corruption. These companies aren't donating money out of good of their hearts, they're donating because they know that flattering Trump's ego and forking over cash will extract favorable policies from his White House.

Understandably, X has been flooded with outraged responses to the photos—

"This is the East Wing of the White House today. If you ever took a tour, you entered here. Trump is destroying our history to build himself a ballroom. Stop this madness!" wrote writer Joe Flood.

"This is a photo of the East Wing of the White House. Trump once said, 'It won’t interfere with the current building. It’ll be near it but not touching it..." How dare that f*cking piece of shIt do this. Stop the project & make him pay to restore it. Then evict him," wrote Henry M. Rosenberg.

"Trump is tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build a $250 million golden ballroom for himself and his donors," posted the X account for The Democrats.

"WHY THE F*CK DO WE NEED A MARALAGO BALLROOM IN THE WHITE HOUSE? I HOPE THE NEXT PRESIDENT DEMOLISHES THE PIECE OF SH*T. This photo: The East Wing is being destroyed after Trump promised he wouldn't destroy ANY of the original structure," wrote user Annie van Leur.

Is this the same Donald Trump who said the White House was a "real dump", or an impostor?

All from the same article, CBS News…

Meredith O'Rourke, a top political fundraiser for Mr. Trump, is leading the effort, paired with the Trust for the National Mall, an organization that supports the National Park Service. The trust's nonprofit status means donations come with a federal tax write-off.
===

Officials at some companies said the decision to give money was based on a desire to show support for Mr. Trump
=====

In July, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the 90,000-square-foot annex would be paid for by private donors and the president himself
=====

"I'm paying for it. I'm paying for it," Mr. Trump said Tuesday, predicting that the ballroom could cost $250 million.
======

How much has the president committed to the ballroom from his personal fortune?

White House officials declined to say.

"That amount has yet to be determined as construction continues," one official said.

(Edit: Is this the same Donald Trump that’s famous for stiffing his creditors, cheating on three wives and bankrupting casinos?)

Is there no agency charged with the protection of heritage buildings over there? Surely the design and its effect on any existing structure of national or heritage importance needs to be approved by someone?

If you own an old or historic building and you decide you want to put a trailer park around it and add a couple of extra floors and put a billboard on the roof can you just get on with it?

Nute, there is such a thing, but generally it only applies to ordinary folks- the government can get around it if they wish.

In this case, Trump is not altering the White House, he’s adding a building that wasn’t there before so he’s probably not afoul of the rules there- he’s altered the appearance of the area by taking up some of the grounds to do this.

Personally, I think a new ballroom is a waste of space, but it got pushed through.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this actually has some underlying security rationale as it gives them a chance to dig and it in a bunch of concrete- but to me as a member of the hoi polloi it’s a waste of time, resources, and space. Big formal events are more political fundraisers than actually accomplishing anything in my mind.

Interesting, thanks Doc.

The photos in the news show some pretty significant demolition of parts of the WH, but the underlying structure appears to be reinforced concrete so I assume its not very old but shame the rose garden got ripped up to make way for it.

The historic places I have visited over there appear to be very well looked after, but they have been civil war and colonial era things.

You can't chuck a stick here without hitting something old (I mean really old - my last house was 1550 and my local pub is older than the US, as in predates Columbus), and everything old has some level of protection, often to the point where ownership can be a bit of a pain in the butt.

There was an interesting segment on NPR about it
They are tearing down the facade. An architect was on. He said that section was rebuilt in 1904, not old by your standards Nute! The second floor added in the 40's. The place was built on a swamp. Much of what was original is no more, needing to be restored. No heating with fireplaces or coal braziers either.
I remember the media bitching about Clinton tearing up the back lawn to put in a rubber running track. Paid for by donners, so who gives a shit?
If you have nothing to bitch about, this is as good a thing as any to clutch your pearls over.
Not so much for some of us.
I do wonder if they will call it the Epstein Ball Room? How many of the donners for this project went to Epstein Island? Wink

I'll bitch about it and I ain't clutching pearls. It's the White House aka The People's House. Tearing down the East Wing to make way for trump's dumbass ball-room is an abomination. The entire idea of building a ball-room next to the White House is a typical hare-brained idea from trump. He thinks the White House is some golf country club that he owns. I'm sure he will guild everything in the building with fake gold fixtures, fake gold toilets and make sure fake gold statues of him are placed in all the strategic places.

The entire world is making fun of us because of this idiot. I'm sure trump will install his "Arc De Trump" on the front lawn before he is all done.

I hope the next administration bull-dozes the place flat.

So putting a swimming pool inside the whitehouse was OK?
Look up the history of renovations done to the peoples house. It's long. All were deemed stupid by some, for certain.
Plenty of other things for me to get pissed about. Not coming together and pass a budget, for one.
Build it, tear it down next year. Not going to bother me a bit.

You're equating Ford's building of a swimming pool in the White House with the destruction of the East Wing? So trump can build his fucking Ball Room structure that is larger than the White House as a monument to himself?

What am I missing?

You have become a trumptard?
