I believe this stems from the State making public they had $33B surplus in the state treasury.
The governor suggesting a program to lower property taxes which have risen sharply due to home value evaluations.
The Dems wanted it for social programs (Hint).
I think it would be best spent to relieve some property taxes but a greater portion going to provide compensation increases for school teachers and law enforcement / fire fighters.
Invest in the community.
But to enable freeloaders when businesses are looking for help everywhere?
Got to really scratch my head.

College town rents are high, but this is only going to push the available private rental housing to become owner occupied and possibly pushing students into state owned housing.

It ain't free, if your neighbor's paying for it.

What is sad is so many who get 'free' lunch, 'free' rent, etc have no concept that it is everyone else who is paying their way.

I doubt there is any solution for this. Most of them would be happy to just have a one room abode with a couch, a TV, fast food drive through or door delivery and that is a good enough life for them.

The lack of self determination is one of those chickens coming home to roost. People will regret that someday.
